Could Direct 'Sheriff Street Stories' About Childhood In Ireland NextIt's always disappointing when strong directors come out with a film that is absolutely terrible. Jim Sheridan's "Dream House," with an 8% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes and only $14.5 million dollars in box office so far, initially had a boatload of promise with charismatic stars Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts, but what we saw was terrifyingly bad (and not because trailers promised a horror story à la Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining"). And just as everyone was beginning to wonder what had happened, besides the extensive reshoots, the LA Times reported late last week that Sheridan wanted his name taken off the final film.

Break it down however you want, but its simple economics. The last month has been absolutely saturated with product, so few of it appealing to mainstream America. These movies aren’t bad. And, in most cases, the marketing isn’t all that faulty. It’s pure numbers. The market can’t withstand this over-saturation. In September, eighteen films entered wide release of 1500 or more theaters, and only six crossed $30 million domestic, two of them benefiting from inflated 3D prices. That’s a poor record of success, even as we keep the bar exactly that low.

Review: 'Dream House' Is An Awful Nightmare

Universal has gone out of its way to market the unfortunately dour "Dream House" as a gooseflesh-raising thriller, emphasizing a pair of ghostly girls and positioning them on a decaying staircase in an image eerily evocative of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." The fact that this image is so fleeting that its presence in the movie could easily be counted in the milliseconds didn't matter to them. After being delayed due to reshoots and nearly every creative principle publicly distancing themselves from the film (including director Jim Sheridan and stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz), they needed to drum up all the sizzle they could for this supernaturally dull misfire. And hey, little ghost kids is as good a way as any.

I hope you've all iced your crotch punches from last weekend and are ready to get down to brass tax. Joseph Gordon-Levitt with cancer! Come on now, people, we've got to be SERIOUS, it's almost October after all. We need politics and drama and commentary, like in the scathing feminist critique of "What's Your Number?" (Lemme guess, Chris Evans is number 20 and she doesn't have to go over the socially acceptable limit of dudes effed). So put on the big boy or girl pants, this weekend we've got "50/50," "Dream House," "What's Your Number?" and "Take Shelter" hitting screens.

You hear that? It's the deadly sound of silence from the folks behind Jim Sheridan's "Dream House." Other than a trailer that dropped this summer and a clip that arrived earlier this week, it seems that Universal would like to pretend this movie isn't coming out at all, despite the starry cast of Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts.

It's probably safe to say by this point that Jim Sheridan's "Dream House" with Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts is a bit of a mess. With the film delayed from a previously planned February release due to reshoots, it arrives next week in theaters with little fanfare. The trailer was released in the middle of the summer to little response, and pretty much gave up every twist in the movie, playing like a poor man's "Shutter Island." Meanwhile, CinemaBlend had reported that behind the scenes neither the director (who apparently had the movie taken away from him) nor the cast are pleased with the final result, which may be why there is a curious lack of press just ten days from its release. But just when you thought the minor-key saga of "Dream House" couldn't any weirder, there's this.

Poor Jim Sheridan, we love the dude, but he seems to have fallen on a run of weird, wacky luck. The director followed up his beautiful and brave "In America" somewhat inexplicably with the 50 Cent thingy "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'." He seemed to return back to fare worth his talent with "Brothers," the remake of the Susanne Bier film, but the film was delayed and when it finally landed in theaters both critics and audiences shrugged off the war drama. A bit unfair really, since it was a very strong film with excellent performances all around by Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman with a breakthrough turn by Bailee Madison. But Sheridan's hard luck continued on "Dream House," another return to mainstream fare.

Daniel Craig & Rachel Weisz Thriller 'Dream House' Loses Appeal On R-Rating

In what is likely another ridiculous decision by the Motion Picture Association of America, the new thriller "Dream House" will still receive an R-rating upon its release. The Hollywood Reporter announced that the movie, which stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz has lost the appeal for a lesser rating put forth by Morgan Creek, who produced and financed the project. Never ones to be verbose or clear in their decisions, the Classification and Rating Appeals Board (an arm of the MPAA) simply stated that the rating was based on "some violence" that is featured in the film. Well, that clears it up.

Plus New One-Sheets For 'Killer Elite' & 'The Whistleblower'While we don't want to be that guy, necessarily, there are some films that start to look like disasters from miles away. No one sets out to make a bad picture, but sometimes fate conspires in the worst possible way, and a pile up of misfortune leads to something that, even months before release, is clearly fated for horrible reviews, worse box office and a quick trip to the bargain bin. Think "The Stepford Wives," "Bewitched," "The Invasion," or even films that Nicole Kidman wasn't in, like "Jonah Hex," "Bonfire of the Vanities," or, most recently "Mars Needs Moms" -- films reshot, recut and delayed until they made even less sense than they did before.
