DreamWorks Animation have to be feeling pretty good these days. Coming off their creative highpoint to date with "How To Train Your Dragon," the company picked up two Oscar nominations last week for the solid (if uninspired) "Puss In Boots" and "Kung Fu Panda 2," while arch-rivals Pixar missed out, having dropped the ball for the first time with "Cars 2."

Last year's "Shrek Forever After" was billed as the "final chapter" in the DreamWorks fairytale franchise, but with the four films grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide between them ("Shrek 2" remains the fifth biggest domestic grosser), the likelihood of Katzenberg & Co leaving the series alone was minimal. And so, barely 18 months after the fourth "Shrek," we'll see "Puss In Boots," a spin-off focusing on the Zorro-esque kitty voiced by Antonio Banderas in the second, third and fourth films.

Call this one a victory for Paramount, and a big one at that. “Super 8,” which opened to $37 million, was advertised with only the slightest of peekaboos, an ad campaign that played less coy and more stubbornly mysterious. While the film was pitched on the name of Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker has his name on a lot of projects annually, and the wealth of offerings has become so consistent that it no longer tilts the needle.

Dear Zillionaire Jeffrey Katzenberg, let it be known before we begin our article that our heart bleeds for you and your stock holders. In December 2010 2009, just a few short weeks after James Cameron's latest opus had proven to be a runaway smash hit, 3D was heralded as the next the savior of cinema by the industry, many of whom had just received the best Christmas bonus ever. The technology, and more importantly, the resounding reception audiences met it with, had apparently revitalized, rejuvenated and revolutionized the film industry. In 2010, "Avatar" (which was released at the tail end of 2009) grossed $2.7 billion worldwide (highest grossing film of all time, worldwide), "Toy Story 3" nabbed $1.06 billion (4th highest of all time worldwide), "Alice In Wonderland" hauled in $1.02 billion (6th highest film of all time worldwide) and the the world was 3D's oyster.

DreamWorks Animation recently announced their slate of films through 2014 and it was a pretty balanced blend of sequels/spinoffs and original content. Simply put, established franchises pay the bills while original content are things that the studio hopes catches on in a big enough way so it can be turned into a franchise. We're living in a spinoff world these days so it's no surprise that another film is being added to the DreamWorks slate and yep, it features characters you've seen before.

DreamWorks Animation Lineup Through 2014 A Mix Of Sequels & Original Content

Earlier today, DreamWorks Animation announced its lineup through 2014, with six original films and three sequels to the "Kung Fu Panda," "Madagascar" and "How to Train Your Dragon" franchises. Original films are titled "Rise of the Guardians," "The Croods," "Turbo," "Me and My Shadow," "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" and "Puss in Boots," a spin-off from the eponymous character in the "Shrek" franchise. This announcement comes on the tail end of CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg's statement last week that DreamWorks Animation would not necessarily be releasing three animated films per year as it did last year.

Aliens" and the "Shrek" sequels substitute star voices, bombastic action sequences and already-past-their-sell-by-date pop culture gags for heart and soul, to increasingly diminishing returns. DreamWorks, that other animation studio besides Pixar and Disney, just announced their newest animated musical project titled “Monkeys of Bollywood.” Based on the Hindu poem “The Ramayana,” the concept follows two monkeys instead of humans, in a bid to capture the attention of children worldwide. The monkeys try to stop an ancient demon from taking over the world.

Guaranteeing Continued Employment For Jack BlackSo "Shrek" spawned four movies, three spinoff movies, 10 videogames, a Broadway musical and most importantly, it made DreamWorks Animation a shitload of money. It seems their plan of cramming franchises down your throat until you choke on it is working as speaking with Empire, studio head honcho Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed he plans to keep the gravy train rolling on several animated franchise vehicles.
