'Dumb And Dumber To' Finds A Home At Universal

It’s been quite some time since we last saw Harry and Lloyd. Yes, there was that abysmal “Dumb and Dumberer” prequel and there was even a Saturday morning cartoon series which was terrible in its own way, but forgivable from a nostalgic point of view. As far as we were concerned the real Harold and Lloyd were where we last left them at the end of “Dumb and Dumber,” wandering the desert in search of fame and fortune. However, thanks to Universal Pictures, a proper sequel to the comedy classic is finally on the horizon.

What once were grand plans for a summer 2013 are now gone. Despite talking about it a lot, particularly on their press run for "The Stooges," it looks like Warner Bros. has finally yanked the lifeline that was keeping the thin hopes of a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" alive. But perhaps this isn't really a surprise?

Despite huffing and puffing about the sequel not moving fast enough, it seems Jim Carrey is still involved as is Jeff Daniels, and the duo are set to reprise their roles as Harry and Lloyd in a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber." The movie has been in the works for a while now, and at one point was said to be aiming to shoot this fall, and while that may not be happening, movement continues. But even better, we now have some idea of the "plot" (such as it is) that will send these low IQ dudes on their next adventure.

Currently keeping busy with a fine performance on HBO’s “The Newsroom,” even when the show around him perhaps isn’t so good, actor Jeff Daniels’ commitments to the Aaron Sorkin show obviously means that his film opportunities will be somewhat slimmer in the near future. The star will appear next in Rian Johnson’s “Looper,” but after that talk will instead turn to one of the numerous projects waiting for Daniels to take a break from the show. One that keeps cropping up is the long-discussed sequel to “Dumb and Dumber,” and only a few months after Jim Carrey suggested that the film was dead, Daniels recently expressed the opposite.

Talked about fro almost as long as the Farrelly Brothers' "The Three Stooges," a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" seems to have been kicking around as an idea/rumor for a while now and for fans of the awesomely low-brow comedy, it looked like those dreams were coming true. This spring, Peter Farrelly confidently stated he had Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels set to return with a September shoot all lined up. But those plans appear to have been canceled.

In the works for a while now, and most recently kicking back to life last summer when it was reported that Jim Carrey was eyeballing a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber" as a potential next project, it looks like everything is coalescing for the return of Harry and Lloyd.

During press for "Mr. Popper's Penguins," Jim Carrey hinted that he would be open to sequels of some of his earlier films. It looks like that wasn't just idle speculation. The mega-star, who quietly led "Mr. Popper's Penguins" to over $185 million worldwide, is returning to the well for arguably his most beloved role, Lloyd Christmas, with a sequel to "Dumb and Dumber." The Farrelly Brothers will be returning to direct, and Jeff Daniels is apparently being sought to return as well. Daniels, mind you, is 56, and Carrey is 49. So apparently it will be a tragedy about two sadly aging mentally retarded friends, because it's increasingly apparent that Carrey has lost whatever mojo he had.
