Yep, it's officially official. Late last year, MGM and Paramount decided to team up to back the Brett Ratner directed "Hercules," starring Dwayne Johnson. We hoped that it might be a cruel joke on us all, but alas, it's moving forward.

After three straight "Transformers" movies, we kind of forgot that Michael Bay movies used to be fun. Testosterone fueled fun, sure, but fun nonetheless. But he's taken a break from making robots go boom to make his "indie" movie, and goddamn, if this trailer for "Pain And Gain" isn't a steroid boost right to the nostalgia center of our brains.

In case Eugene Jarecki's recent documentary "The House I Live In" didn't get the message across: the war on drugs isn't working and is penalizing people with dranconian laws that do nothing to stop the trafficking and use of narcotics. But the war on drugs hasn't met the likes of Dwayne Johnson.

Ah, Brett Ratner. The much-beloved filmmaker behind such fondly remembered classics as "Rush Hour," "Rush Hour 2" and "Rush Hour 3" is so popular among the film blogging community that every one of his new projects is greeted with a collective 'huzzah!' on the Internet. His fine eye for material, and Scorsese/De Niro-like relationship with Chris Tucker has seen him pick up glowing reviews for films like the Frank Capra-esque "Family Man," the Bryan Singer-esque "X-Men: The Last Stand," and the Brett Ratner-esque "Tower Heist."

It's virtually unheard of for a series to peak with its fifth installment, but by quite some distance, 2011's "Fast Five" turned out to be the most entertaining of the illegal-road-race franchise (which now has very little to do with road racing). Director Justin Lin, in his third film of the series, cracked the secret that time around, partly by adding the charisma of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to the cast as a supercop tracking down fugitive speed freaks Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, and the film became a monster worldwide hit, by far the biggest of the five.

With "The Expendables" and "Red" bringing the old people B-movie thing back into vogue, and while those films wink at '80s action movie conventions, "Dan Mintner: Badass For Hire" drives a truck through them. And who better to get on board than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson?

Comic-Con may be over, but that doesn't mean the news of comic adaptations comes to an end. While thousands are stripping out of the cosplay outfits and recovering from nacho hangovers, Hollywood continues to move forward and another interesting bit of news has arrived concerning a property that isn't quite as well known as Superman, Spider-Man or Batman.

Well, if Dito Montiel is an example of anything, it's of that famous old saying: when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. It was about a year and a half ago that the director endured savage reviews at Sundance for "The Son Of No One," his procedural starring a promising cast of Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche and more that ultimately wound up getting a cursory release before disappearing onto home video. But he's dusted himself off and gotten another film on the way, "Empire State," and the first two images of the film's stars, Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson, have emerged.

Watch: International Trailer For 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Still Kinda Dumb, But It Does Have Ninjas

While "Battleship" will probably still be the dumbest movie of the summer by a country mile (though with $129 million in the bank already thanks to international ticket sales, it's Universal who's laughing last), "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" could be coming in at close second.

Three years back, Paramount hoped that "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" would follow in the footsteps of their other toy-based franchise, "Transformers," and become a giant blockbuster. The film did ok -- $300 million worldwide is nothing to sniff at. But given that the film cost a little more than $200 million, excluding marketing, it wasn't the kind of profit machine that they'd hoped for. Unbowed, the studio have ripped it up and (almost) started again, bringing a new director, "Step Up 3D" helmer Jon M. Chu, and essentially restarted the cast, with Dwayne Johnson now heading up the film (after he helped make "Fast Five" by far the biggest in the series), and Bruce Willis added to the mix as well.
