It’s been a red meat kinda year at the box office. The number one slot at the box office has been taken over by an R-rated action movie five times thus far, the latest example being hoo-rah Navy SEALs film “Act of Valor”. With constant studio waffling over ratings, mid-budgeted fare like “Contraband” and “Safe House” have still handily trumped PG-13 four-quadrant "alleged" blockbusters like “This Means War” and “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” all year long despite the supposed ratings handicap. And those films all had noted stars, familiar leading men and women, while “Act of Valor” is populated entirely by real armed forces.

With Brett Ratner already on the comeback path/apology tour with a bunch of smaller gigs including directing a TV pilot, a Jennifer Lopez video and a GLAAD campaign, it looks like his return behind the camera will be (shocker!) another big studio tentpole, with a rising franchise action hero looking to take the lead.

Does your franchise need a boost of charisma and talent? Hire Dwayne Johnson. The wrestler-turned-action hero made his presence known in last year's "Fast Five," which also turned out to be the biggest (and most enjoyable, by most accounts) entry in the series, spawning talk that Universal was gonna double up on the follow-ups, with "Fast Six" and "Fast Seven" to shoot back-to-back to deliver one, big linked story. Well, for all you gear heads, the good news is that the sequel is indeed happening, but alas it seems you'll only be getting one more movie for now.

Review: Flavorless 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' Isn't Even An Admirable Folly

Had its filmmakers not hedged all over their creative bets, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" might have at least been an admirable folly. Its creators' many attempts to pander to the lowest common denominator and attract as many potential viewers as possible has made 'Journey 2' look like it was assembled by a creatively challenged brain trust.

For someone as naturally, winningly charismatic as he is, and considering he's generally been the best thing in the generally terrible movies he's starred in, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson hasn't had the easy road to A-list stardom that you might imagine;

So, what does a Michael Bay movie look like without $100 million dollars worth of explosions and Victoria's Secret models? We'll soon find out. The director is pushing ahead with plans to do a smaller film after his trilogy of "Transformers" movies and despite the low budget -- somewhere around $20 million bucks -- he may be getting two pretty big starts to help him out.

Dwayne Johnson and Taylor Lautner? Sure, that's the kind of bicep and pec showdown any producer would love to have, particularly if your names happen to be Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Dwayne Johnson Tweets Early Look (Sort Of, Not Really) At His Role In 'G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation'So, the first trailer for the $200 million "Battleship" arrived last week and yes, it was awful. For a movie that is supposed to be about an alien invasion or something, it starts off with a shot of Brooklyn Decker's boobs and gets into some kind of bad boy/good girl romance tale before getting to Captain Liam Neeson telling his crew to fire all their weapons at the incoming creatures. But missing in all this was any real face time with Rihanna, the pop star who is making her movie debut in the blockbuster film.
