Dwayne Johnson has been an actor divided between making paydays with terrible family movies while trying to build up a more respectable career as an action star. Case in point: while he starred in "Fast Five" this year, his next film to hit theaters will be "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." But it looks like another big sequel in 2012 will find the former wrestler taking a big role.

Hooray for Hollywood, or something. The 2011 box office finally snapped out of its doldrums with more reheated crap, “Fast Five” opening to a spectacular-for-Universal $83 million. The car blockbuster’s weekend surpasses “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” as the biggest opening weekend in Universal history, and with spectacular overseas results, the film is poised to do upwards of $400-$500 million globally, topping the $353 worldwide take of “Fast And Furious,” the last film in the series.

Dwayne Johnson's acting career has pretty much vacillated between two opposite poles: his skull cracking ways that you can check out this weekend in "Fast Five" and his softer, more family friendly persona that he's displayed in films like "The Tooth Fairy" and "The Game Plan." But we have to admit, this news threw us for a loop and actually, is a pretty big gear change for the muscle heavy star and we're kind of rooting for him to nail it.

The Onion Hilariously Interviews Screenwriter Chris MorganOn the face of it, this weekend's "Fast Five" pretty much seems like yet another rote entry in the series, but for Universal, the film is anything but usual. According to the LA Times, the film is budgeted somewhere between $125-170 million, the most expensive film yet in the series that thus far has kept expenses on each outing under triple digits. But more importantly, it will find the franchise shifting gears (pun intentional) moving away from the gearhead origins and shifting into something else, a heist series that won't require new viewers to know anything about the previous films.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson knows that his bread is buttered on two different sides, and full credit to his agents, they know to make not either side gets dry. The former wrestler does boffo box office in kids fare like "The Tooth Fairy" or "Race To Witch Mountain," while he maintains his street cred jumping into action roles like "Faster" or the upcoming "Fast Five." So it's no surprise that the guy who is also going to be in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" has just signed on for another meat and potatoes actioner to balance things out.
