First, 20th Century Fox has come onboard George Clooney’s “The Monuments Men,” which the multi-hyphenate is set to write, direct, and star in. We’ve been hearing about this project for a while now, but due to financial constraints, Sony Pictures has had to call for a little help from Fox to back the picture. Set in World War II, the film involves a plot to protect stolen art from destruction at the hands of Nazis. Cate Blanchett is attached as the female lead, with Bill Murray apparently circling a role as well. Yeah, that’s a great cast, but none of them are exactly box office guarantees with material like this outside of Clooney – and thankfully he likes to pick edgier adult fare akin to this for his mainstream endeavors. The deal will see Fox co-finance the picture with Sony and distribute internationally. [THR]

You would think that given the release calendar for 2014 is still pretty wide open, studios wouldn't be crowding their major tentpoles close together, but already, March of that year is looking like it's going to be a wrestling match of competing films. And showdowns don't get much bigger than Tom Cruise vs. Angelina Jolie.

It looks like Kevin Costner isn't the only one from this summer's miniseries hit "Hatfields & McCoys" who is going to get a nice career bump. His co-star Bill Paxton is now lining up his own big budget role, alongside none other than Tom Cruise.

Sorry ladies, Tom Hardy is taken and her name is Charlotte Riley. The Brit actress met the actor on the set of the TV series "The Take" and the next thing you knew they were falling in love and cast together as Heathcliff and Catherine in "Wuthering Heights." And while Hardy has since seen his star shoot into the stratosphere, his fiancée hasn't quite had the same trajectory. But her next gig should see her profile take a considerable boost.

Tom Cruise is back baby, and the actor hasn't been slowing down for a second, eager to strike with the moment is still hot. But a side-story to his recent string of movies has been the bevy of beauties he's lined up to star with. Paula Patton and Lea Seydoux prowled "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol"; Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough feature in "Oblivion" and Rosamund Pike stars in "One Shot." And another talented, and yes attractive, lead is lining up for Cruise's next big screen undertaking.

Tom Cruise is going to be spending the bulk of 2012 working on two sci-fi projects, and he's adding some interesting co-stars as both "Oblivion" and "All You Need Is Kill" gear up.

Doug Liman's last effort behind the camera was the Valerie Plame drama "Fair Game," which didn't quite become the box office hot button smash or Oscar contender it seemed like it would be on paper. And while the director is currently lining up his next feature film (more on that in a second), he's going to get back to politically charged material by taking on a provocative documentary.

Tom Cruise is on the comeback trail in a big way. The star, for nearly two decades Hollywood's untouchable golden boy, has had a rough half-decade, grabbing the wrong kind of headlines for some bizarre public behavior and starring in a string of domestic disappointments; "Lions for Lambs," "Valkyrie" and last year's "Knight & Day" (although the latter two managed impressive overseas hauls).

It's win some/lose some today for Doug Liman, who has been juggling a few potential projects for his next effort, following last year's political drama "Fair Game." But it looks like one long-gestating project is now dead, while another finds a studio courting one of the biggest actors in Hollywoodland.
