Of course, nothing has been sacred when it comes to "Family Guy" and making jokes. No subject, person, historical event or [insert whatever] has been out of bounds for the creators, so as the four-time Emmy winning show gears up for another campaign, they've put last year's breakout show firmly on their radar.

Awards season is just getting ready to gear up in the movie world, but awards show fanatics (if there are such creatures) don't have to wait for the new year to sit through a three hour-plus session of people winning things, because this Sunday brings the Emmy Awards, the annual celebration of the best/most popular/however you want to define it in television.

You can't please everyone. And award ceremonies, in particular, never please everybody. Voted for by a small group, who are more often than not much older than those in the media, or who watch the shows, awards nominations and the eventual winners are generally frustrating, whether it's in the music, movie or television world. And this year's batch of Emmy nods are no exception.

So 5:30 (PST) this morning saw Jimmy Kimmel and Kerry Washington announce the 2012 Emmy nominations, and it served as a good lesson in why not to not give the organization too much credit. Yesterday we'd suggested that shows like "Parks and Recreation" and "Louie" were starting to make major inroads, giving us a little reason for optimism. And there were certainly things to be celebrated in this morning's nominees: actress and comedy nominations for "Girls," typically good showings for "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men," and well-deserved nods for two actors we thought were unlikely, Jared Harris and Idris Elba.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, "The Dark Knight Rises", blah blah blah. Friday might be the day that many movie-watchers have been waiting for for four years, but tomorrow sees one of the biggest points of the year for watchers of the small screen; namely, the announcement of the Emmy nominations.

We're still months and months away from the Oscars, but the other awards ceremony of the moving image is starting to sneak up; two weeks from today, the nominations for the Primetime Emmys, the biggest awards honoring television comedies, dramas, miniseries and movies, will be announced, ahead of the ceremony itself in September. Given the stars that the small screen attracts these days, it's just as glitzy as the Academy Awards, and given that we're living in what's generally deemed to be something of a golden age of television, there are more good shows on the air than could possibly be honored in a single ceremony. Someone's going to miss out.
