The Snubs & Surprises Of the 2014 Emmy Awards
Don't expect a swift response to any communication sent to someone who works in the TV industry: last night was the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards (see the list of winners here), and the parties were going on long into the night. As we said this morning, "Breaking Bad," "Modern Family" and "Sherlock" were the big winners, with Bryan Cranston, Julianna Marguiles, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jim Parsons, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jessica Lange taking the leading actor trophies, and Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Ty Burrell, Allison Janney, Martin Freeman and Kathy Bates winning prizes for supporting roles.

Weird Al Yankovic Emmy Awards
It's heartening that in a pop culture world where Nicki Minaj gets millions upon millions of views mostly with respect to her ample posterior, there's still room for Weird Al Yankovic (and we hope he eventually does a cover of "Anaconda"). The premiere song parodist dropped his latest album Mandatory Fun a few months back, and for the first time in his career, it reached number one on the charts. People still love Weird Al, and last night he did his thing at the Emmy Awards.

Billy Crystal Emmys
Last night, the TV world's finest put on their best suits and nicest dresses for the the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards. "Breaking Bad" won big, and there was much laughter and celebration, but there was one person whose presence was deeply missed: Robin Williams. The late comedian and actor was incandescent on every stage, and his death continues to be mourned in Hollywood. Last night, Williams received a lovely tribute from a longtime friend.

Breaking Bad
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards were held last night in Los Angeles. And if you thought that NBC were somehow airing a repeat of last year's ceremony, you'd be forgiven: the awards were dominated by previous winners, with "Modern Family" tieing "Frasier"'s record for most victories in comedy, and "Breaking Bad" taking its third drama prize on the trot.

2014 Emmy Predictions: Who Will Win
Like it or not, Oscar season kicks off next week, with the premiere of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Birdman” at the Venice Film Festival. But we must first close off another awards season, and this coming Monday sees the curtains close on the 2013/2014 TV season, with statues handed out at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Barely Legal Pawn
Oh sure, we like our artsy fartsy movies, and ruminate with furrowed brows about the Oscars and the industry, and whatnot. But at the end of the day, you're just as likely to find Playlist members sitting down to watch "Chopped" or "Pawn Stars." That's just how we roll. And it looks like we're not the only ones.

2014 Emmy Snubs Surprises
This morning brought the announcement of the 2014 Emmy nominations, and as usual, pretty much no one's happy. Well, the nominees are probably happy. But every TV watcher or fan will, as is always the case with these awards, have some bone to pick, from "Walking Dead" fans who don't understand why the biggest drama on TV is ignored by the Television Academy (spoiler: because it's super boring), to your grandparents, still holding out for recognition for "NCIS."

2014 Emmy Nominations
After months away from awards, we're feeling so much better. That wheezing cough has finally disappeared, our complexions are no longer grey, and that weird scaly rash has disappeared. Let's hope it lasts: the movie awards season is fast approaching, but first up are the Emmys, the biggest celebration of TV in the calendar, which announced their nominations for the 2014 batch this morning.

2014 Emmy Predictions
In forty-eight hours or so, twelve months of programming and several more of campaigning come to a head, as Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly (for some reason) will announce the 2014 Emmy nominees from the Leonard H. Goldstone Theater at about 8:40 AM EST. The biggest back-slapping event in the TV calendar hasn't quite inspired the same kind of cottage industry as the Academy Awards, but at a point where television shows dominate the pop culture almost as much as movies (if not more so), the Emmys certainly become more and more important.

Actors Deserving Emmys, Summer 2014
We're having a sustained and much needed break from the Oscars, but that doesn't mean that awards are completely banished from the cultural landscape. For better or worse, Emmy season is sneaking up. The biggest and most prestigious TV awards in the calendar ended their qualifying season at the end of May, and ballots opened only a few days ago, with voting set to finish next week, ahead of the announcement of nominations on July 10th (with the awards themselves following on August 25th).
