Endless Love
“There was a girl, a beautiful girl surrounded by people yet utterly alone.” If you can make it through that first line of “Endless Love” without gagging, you’ll probably be able to brave the whole film without major incident. In fact, if you’re a teenage girl, you might even like the movie so much you put a picture of Alex Pettyfer on your wall and buy the (admittedly good) soundtrack. Do kids still do that type of stuff anymore or is it all Snapchat and knockout games? Why does this movie make us feel so old and grumpy?

A while back we brought y'all the trailer for “Endless Love,” the forthcoming regeneration of a 1981 Franco Zefffirelli movie that some number of 40-year olds presumably remember fondly enough from their teenage years to want to remake. This time it's Alex Pettyfer and Gabriella Wilde falling in forbidden teenage love, with her the geek coming out of her shell and him the boy with a bad past and an irresistible grin. Or something. The original had Brooke “spirit of the 80s” Shields in the girl's role and Martin “vanished entirely” Hewitt in the boy's, and is mostly now remembered for being Tom Cruise's first film.

The crowd this is geared towards probably doesn't remember, but "Endless Love" is actually remake of the 1981 film starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt, that also served as an early launching pad for Tom Cruise. And so, what does this do-over bring to the table?

Tom Cruise, pre fame feature
From tiny, acne-ridden, squeaky-voiced acorns, massive oaks of megastardom can grow. Not literally, of course, in Tom Cruise's case (obligatory height reference), but in every figurative way possible, he is an enormous presence in Hollywood, as a producer, as a celebrity and most importantly as a greenlight-giving, budget-busting, bona fide movie star. For better or worse, we've few enough left of those. For anyone who grew up watching movies any time in the eighties, nineties or even noughties, Tom Cruise is simply a fact of life: an immovable object; a mathematical constant like Pi, that we'll never quite get to the end of defining. His movies succeed, his movies fail (all judged on the warped power-of-n matrix of the tentpole), but Tom Cruise TM endures, and will be jumping out of a building on a movie screen near you very soon, if he isn't doing just that, right now.

Having landed its Raphael just before in the weekend in the shape of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" actor Alan Ritchson, Michael Bay hasn't hung around before locking down the rest of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" for the mo-cap-heavy reboot of the comic/animation franchise he's producing for director Jonathan Liebesman. Deadline report that the mutant quartet is being filled out by Pete Ploszek as Leonardo, Jeremy Howard as Donatello and Noel Fisher as Michelangelo. The latter's perhaps the best-known of the quartet, having previously appeared in Liebsesman's "Battle: Los Angeles," as well as "Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part Two" and "Hatfields & McCoys." Howard seems to be a complete newcomer, while Ploszek is our immediate favorite of the four, given that he appeared in an episode of "Parks & Recreation." The four join Megan Fox in the film, which opens on May 20th, 2014.

Remember 1981’s “Endless Love” starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt (who he?) from Italian director Franco Zeffirelli? Well, this writer doesn’t, but that would be the case for any Brooke Shields film made before he was born. A lot of people just might remember it though, but not because of the romantic drama plot about a teenage couple whose love is continually thwarted by (as IMDb puts it) by “circumstance and accident.” So why might you remember it then? Well, there are two reasons. The first is the song’s theme – the Diana Ross and Lionel Richie song of the same name. The second is that it was the first appearance of a 19 year-old Tom Cruise on the big screen.
