Enemy, Jake Gyllenhaal
While the idea of an actor playing against himself is often utilized as a novelty selling point, it's clear that for director Denis Villeneuve and Jake Gyllenhaal it was just a starting point for what would be "Enemy." Based on the book by Jose Saramago and dealing with themes of identity, personality and more, it's a film that wants to be taken seriously, and not just for the technical feat of putting Jake Gyllenhaal on film opposite himself.

Enemy
Rising composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans have started to make quite a name for themselves, tuning up recent indie hits “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Simon Killer." And in keeping with their knack of lending an eerie, edgy texture to stories off the conventional path, they've once again conjured up something unique for an upcoming thriller.

Enemy
It seems that Denis Villeneuve doesn't like downtime. After shooting "Enemy" and "Prisoners" back to back, he's already at work on this next movie, the sci-fi drama "The Story Of Your Life," which is expected to shoot this fall. But before that, his first collaboration with Jake Gyllenhaal, "Enemy," will arrive in theaters this spring, and we're not kidding when we call it one of the 21 Best Films Of 2014 We've Already Seen.

Enemy JAKE GYLLENHAAL & DENIS VILLENEUVE
While we spent a good chunk of the fall praising "Prisoners" (it featured one of our favorite shots of 2013), equally excellent is Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villeneuve's other collaboration "Enemy." Catching the film at TIFF, we described it as "part enigmatic existentialist thriller, part psychosexual drama" and one that is "exceptionally dark, harrowing, and especially consuming." Basically, it's one of the Best Films Of 2014 We've Already Seen and with a spring release date set, we're going to be seeing much more from the film very soon.

20 Best 2014 Films We've Already Seen
The more OCD among us here at Playlist Towers find it a source of constant aggravation that release dates vary so much from territory to territory, and festivals often get premieres a full 18-or-so months before a film gains a proper U.S. release, that doing a cut-and-dried list of any given year’s movies becomes less science than art. And while it’s an art that has already yielded our first magnum opus of the year, the 100 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2014, (and we should probably be awarded the rest of January off as a result) there’s still a category of film we’ve left unmined: those movies that we saw and reviewed in 2013 at festivals or sneak screenings or parts foreign that won’t be in theaters until 2014.

A24 Release Dates Under The Skin Enemy Locke
While many modern cinephiles are going gaga for adventurous producers like Annapurna Pictures ("Zero Dark Thirty," "The Master," "Her," "American Hustle" to name a few), there's also another game in town that's quietly building up an impressive roster. Barely a year old, indie distribution company A24 has made quite a name for itself in the last year for acquiring domestic rights to auteur-driven indie fare such as Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa," Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," and James Ponsoldt's "The Spectacular Now" (some of our favorite films of the past year).

And the lists keep on coming... We're just a few weeks away from 2014 (crazy, right?) which means lots of lists are being made, and not just for Santa Claus. Critics, pundits, everyday folks and your next door neighbor are drafting their tally of the year's finest achievement in cinema, and this latest rundown comes from north of the border, with a little twist.

Enemy, Jake Gyllenhaal
So far, the bromance between Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve is working out quite nicely. In addition to strong reviews, and some mild awards season talk, "Prisoners" opened at number one last weekend, marking a nice debut for the director's first Hollywood outing and a bit of bounce back for the actor. And the pair have another movie on the way, one that is decidedly different.

Enemy, Jake Gyllenhaal
If there is any bromantic duo we want to see keep working together, it's Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve. This weekend, their searing and terrific "Prisoners" opens wide. But before they made that film, they first paired up on "Enemy," an ambitious mind-bender featuring Gyllenhaal in the two lead roles.
