Mountains: the new volcanoes. Fifteen years ago, erupting hills of lava formed the basis of dueling studio tentpoles, in the form of "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," and now a similar showdown is brewing over their more dormant, solid cousins, with the announcement of a second film focusing on the tallest mountain in the world, Mt. Everest. A little while back it was announced that Sony were planning "Everest," with Doug Liman directing and Tom Hardy starring, about George Mallory, the first man to attempt the peak, only to die on the third attempt (spoiler!).

To say that Doug Liman has a lot on his plate would be an understatement. Currently shooting "All You Need Is Kill" with Tom Cruise, the director has numerous projects cooking on the side including: the documentary "Reckoning With Torture: Memos And Testimonies From The War On Terror"; a movie about Two-Gun Cohen; an adaptation of Jack Finney's "Time And Again"; the spy flick "The Tourist" and the mountain climbing adventure "Everest." And it's the latter that has just gained a bit of momentum.

Doug Liman's last effort behind the camera was the Valerie Plame drama "Fair Game," which didn't quite become the box office hot button smash or Oscar contender it seemed like it would be on paper. And while the director is currently lining up his next feature film (more on that in a second), he's going to get back to politically charged material by taking on a provocative documentary.

With his last effort, the political drama "Fair Game" dropping last fall, director Doug Liman has spent most of 2011 figuring out what to do next and he's had no shortage of options. But unfortunately, he's been hit with a bit of bad luck. While for a moment there it seemed like his ambitious and long-gestating sci-fi flick "Luna" would be getting off the ground, just last week word arrived that financing had collapsed, effectively killing the project. In the same report it appeared that Warner Bros. was wanting to move ahead with "All You Need Is Kill" but that was contingent on a big star, and while WB wanted Brad Pitt, that's not really near to happening just yet. Liman was also on the wishlist for "The Wolverine" before it went to James Mangold, he signed on to direct a period pic about “Two-Gun” Cohen and he's also got prison pic "Attica" brewing. But it looks like he may be getting to another project first.
