Guillermo del Toro Would Also Like To Direct ‘Maleficent’ (If Given The Chance)

Guillermo del Toro might be distinguishable to many for his rotund physique, but he’s better known these days, production-wise at least, for stretching himself too thin. Since his last film -- 2008’s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” -- he famously hotfooted it from “The Hobbit” over a year ago, citing production delays even before MGM declared bankruptcy, though he’s yet to get started on a new project, even as Peter Jackson’s two-part epic began production earlier in the year. Conventional logic would dictate that del Toro’s long overdue for getting a Spanish-language “one for me” out of his system along the lines of “The Devil’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth”, but he tells The LA Times he’d seriously consider taking on Disney’s revisionist fairy tale “Maleficent” that’s been shopped around since 2009, usually with Angelina Jolie in consideration for the lead role, if the studio asked him. “Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting”, del Toro assures us. Wait, what? Aren’t you meant to be getting ready to make “Pacific Rim”?

After doing the indie thing with "Clay Pigeons," getting a taste of Hollywood with "Shanghai Knights," and breaking out with "Wedding Crashers," David Dobkin is getting ready to change gears a bit. While "Fred Claus" was an embarrassment, his forthcoming Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman comedy "The Change-Up" looks to find the director back in stride and it seems Warner Bros. is ready to allow him to take a chance on something big.

There are two ways through life, the way of nature and the way of grace. Or in Hollywood terms, there are two ways to release a movie: rushed on a tight schedule, or finely tuned with a more realistic production. The battle between Relativity and Universal over their respective Snow White films has been ugly, with the former trumping the latter by moving their Tarsem-directed film all the way up to a March 16, 2012 release date -- nine months from now and no, it hasn't started shooting yet. Universal's "Snow White And The Huntsman" is currently set just under a year away on June 1, 2012, with a comparably luxurious year to get it on screens. And it looks like they're going to use that time wisely.

Also Circling Disney's 'Maleficient'; Director Confirms He's Been Talking To Angelina Jolie, Plus Robert De Niro For 'The Silver Linings Playbook'Update: Ahh, so this is the one of the "several projects" that David O. Russell was talking to Angelina Jolie about. According to THR, now that Tim Burton has dropped the project, "The Fighter" filmmaker is one of the director's "circling" the Sleeping Beauty project "Maleficient." Russell never met a meeting he didn't like, so we're sure he's interested, but knowing his creative differences with studios, we would bet this one is not going to stick.

So Universal and Relativity are playing a game of chicken with the release dates on their dueling "Snow White" projects, right? Wanna know how Relativity is serious about their just announced March 16, 2012 release date which gives them all of ten months to shoot, edit and prepare the film for release?

Like two drunken frat boys engaged in a pissing match for bragging rights, Universal and Relativity have been fighting it out over their competing Snow White movies both set to hit next year. In one corner, we have “Snow White and the Huntsman" with Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman, Charlize Theron set to play the evil queen, Kristen Stewart as Snow White, and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” star Sam Clafin as the prince. In the other corner, we have Tarsem's untitled Snow White movie with Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, Lily Collins, Nathan Lane and Robert Emms. Originally, Tarsem's film was set to be released on June 29, 2012, with Universal's picture coming arriving in December. But last week, Universal announced they were moving their film all the way up to June 1st and switching out their film with Judd Apatow's forthcoming "Knocked Up" spin off, which they bumped to the end of the year. But it looks like Relativity now has the last laugh.

After spending a decade scraping together financing on his films (only working with a major studio once on his passion project "The Fountain"), it seems like suddenly everybody wants to be in the Darren Aronofsky business. We guess that happens when your $13 million-budgeted ballet thriller goes on to make over $100 million dollars and wins an Oscar for its leading lady, despite, as the director has noted, every major studio passing on the film and financing being raised independently. Fox thought they'd get first crack at some of that Aronofsky "edge" giving him a 2-year development deal and hiring him to take on "The Wolverine," a standalone tale that was to take place largely in Japan and repair the damage caused by 2009's franchise killer "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Unfortunately for them (and fans of the character), Aronofsky dropped out of the project shortly before filming when he realized he would be away from his family for nearly a year.

Judd Apatow's 'Knocked Up' Spin-Off Now Set For December 21st, 2012 Every so often, Hollywood studios find themselves in a game of $300 million chicken, when two films with strikingly similar premises are green-lit simultaneously. And almost invariably, the first film out of the blocks ends up as the more successful: "Capote" landed a full year before the identically-plotted "Infamous," and despite a less starry cast walked away with more awards and a bigger haul, while "Dante's Peak" outgrossed the similarly lava-themed "Volcano" by over $50 million.
