Insidious 2, James Wan
A dizzying intersection of three films trails director James Wan as he meets us at the Los Angeles press junket for “Insidious: Chapter 2,” the sequel to his and writer/actor Leigh Whannell’s 2011 hit. Just two weeks prior, he was here promoting “The Conjuring,” and now, he’s battling jet-lag from his time away prepping “Fast and Furious 7” in Atlanta. “I am knee deep in it,” he says of the latest in Universal’s key franchise. “I'm working on it non-stop, not getting any sleep, and yet I'm still wrapping up these [two films] too. My head is exploding.”

Oh man, remember when Tony Jaa was supposed to be the next big thing? That was nearly a decade ago with the release of 2003's "Ong-Bak," a slick action flick that showed the skills of young martial artist who had the killer combination of being quick, inventive and deadly. But the sequels to that film didn't quite land with the same impact, and whatever momentary wave the Thai actor made stateside seemed to evaporate. But now he's giving a roundhouse right kick to a franchise.

During a longwinded, occasionally entertaining rant about how studios can't seem to formulate new intellectual properties, Deadline's Mike Fleming, Jr. let some biggish news slip: Denzel Washington, who can be seen in this weekend's oddly satisfying shoot 'em up "2 Guns," turned down a "small role" in the next "Fast and Furious" movie (currently titled "Fast & Furious 7"), to be directed by James Wan ("The Conjuring," "Insidious: Chapter 2"). No details on who Denzel would have played or why he turned down the role, but Fleming is still hopeful that a major star can fill the void before Wan starts shooting. Considering Universal has already set a July 6th, 2014 date for "Fast & Furious 7," they'd better hurry up and find someone.

'The Conjuring' Director James Wan Says He's Approaching 'Fast & Furious 7' As A “Gritty, '70s Revenge Thriller”

When the news broke that director Justin Lin would be departing the “Fast and Furious” franchise, which he transformed from modest Universal hit into one of the studio's go-to tentpoles, the choice of James Wan as a replacement was quite a surprising one. Adept in low-budget horror with similarly massive returns, the “Insidious” director's work doesn't initially scream “high-octane exotic bombast” but a few recent comments from Wan tell how the series will fit his overall vision.

Who ever thought from its modest beginnings that the “Fast & Furious” franchise would ever reach the point where they have villains to face off against in each entry, with each requiring them to jet off to a variety of new and exotic locations. It was Rio for “Fast Five,” and in the most recent entry, “Furious 6,” the crew spent the majority of their time in London and Spain. Dominic Toretto’s practically James Bond by this point, right?

Going into "Fast & Furious 6" in a couple of weeks time, you'll already know that a sequel has the green light and is already in pre-production for release next summer, with James Wan directing. As far back as 2011, rumors have been swirling that the sixth and seventh chapters in the 'Furious' saga would be telling one massive, linked story. Then as "Fast & Furious 6" started gearing up in earnest, Jason Statham was heavily touted to join, only for him to reportedly turn down the movie. But the rumors persisted, and earlier this year a mega-spoiler arrived indicating that Statham would be in the franchise, but for "Fast & Furious 7." That's all we'll say (click the link to get the full dirt).

The only question facing Universal right now is just how much of the $626 million worldwide that "Fast Five" made, will be matched or exceeded by "Fast & Furious 6." There is really no doubt it's going to be a monster hit at this point, because no matter where you stand on this series, or whether or not you're a film snob, Vin Diesel driving the car out of the front of a jetplane is fucking awesome. Universal knows this, and that's why they're already looking ahead to next year.

Well, Universal was expected to make an announcement this week and indeed, almost seven days to the news that Justin Lin wouldn't be directing "Fast & Furious 7," the studio has found their man. And it's none of the rumored Brad Furman, Harald Zwart or Jeff Wadlow.
