Felony
Unlike his “Warrior” co-star Tom Hardy, Australian actor Joel Edgerton has stuck to being part of smaller films and taking smaller roles like his outing as a member of Seal Team Six in “Zero Dark Thirty” – Baz Luhrmann’s gaudy adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” notwithstanding. Edgerton’s latest is the Australian film “Felony” which, in addition to starring in, he both wrote and produced. The film’s first trailer and poster have both arrived online for your keen minds to investigate.

Felony Joel Edgerton
Malcolm Toohey is a textbook example of a good cop, as we see in the opening of "Felony," written by and starring Joel Edgerton. Toohey is the kind of police officer that doesn't hesitate to charge into a dangerous situation, and by the end of the early moments of the film, his actions find him taking two shots to his bulletproof vest protected chest, all in the name of bringing down a bit player in a much bigger criminal ring. It's the kind of bravery that has earned him the respect of his colleagues. Meanwhile, on the homefront, with a beautiful wife and two young kids, things couldn't look better. But one bad decision, followed by a heat-of-the-moment lie, is all it takes for Malcolm's life to potentially unravel around him. What begins with so much promise in "Felony" is undone by a story that prefers sensationalist melodrama over tackling the much more interesting ethical dilemmas it brings up for its characters.

Felony
While Joel Edgerton has no shortage of friends and collaborators he could have chosen to direct his script for the crime drama "Felony," he landed on Matthew Saville, a TV veteran with a couple of feature films under his belt as well. Edgerton had been impressed with the filmmaker's 2007 Aussie TV movie "The King: The Story of Graham Kennedy" and thus begun the journey to bring the actor's movie to the big screen. "The whole thing started with Joel. He wrote it and approached me about four years ago," Saville explained when we caught up with him over the phone. He was enthusiastic about the experience of working with Edgerton and the result of their teamwork will be seen next week at the Toronto International Film Festival.

As in demand as he is right now, something that Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" is only going to cement, Joel Edgerton seems intent on marching to the beat of his own drum. So for his next film, rather than taking the Hollywood dime, he's working on thriller "Felony," based on his own script, and according to a press release, he's just got a great co-star, in the shape of Oscar-nominee Tom Wilkinson. In the Matthew Saville-directed project, Edgerton who plays a cop who accidentally hits a child in his car, only to lie about the accident, while Wilkinson plays the lead investigator of the incident. Sounds promising, although we're curious to see whether this turns out to be set in Australia, or in the U.S.

He's firmly on his way to the A-list after the critically acclaimed "Warrior," not to mention his upcoming starring roles in "The Great Gatsby" and Kathryn Bigelow's Bin Laden movie, but Australian actor Joel Edgerton's ambitions don't stop at simply appearing on screen. With his brother Nash and several other filmmakers from back home, he set up collective Blue Tongue Films, who've been behind films like "Animal Kingdom," and he has been active as a writer and even director, penning "The Square" with Nash back in 2008, and making his directorial debut with the short "Monkeys" last year.
