To an actor, a franchise is an attractive thing: it could mean years (maybe even decades) of solid, dependable work, with each subsequent installment usually incentivized to some degree and with the sense of community and family growing with each outing (many of the "Harry Potter" actors, both young and old, equated the experience to going back to school). In the mad scramble for big studio parts, a franchise is a sturdily proven gig. Which makes actors who pass on potential franchises somewhat baffling (remember when Josh Hartnett was repeatedly courted for Superman?)... Yet pass they do. While Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson ended up scoring the pivotal leads in "Fifty Shades of Grey," a number of Hollywood's elite passed on the project. Franchise schmanchise.

"American Psycho" author and "Canyons" screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis hasn't been coy about his feelings regarding E.L. James' bestselling "Fifty Shades of Grey," mostly in stream-of-conscious Twitter rants where he makes casting suggestions and volunteers himself for the role of the film's screenwriter (a job that already went to "Saving Mr. Banks" writer Kelly Marcel). Following the news of Charlie Hannam and Dakota Johnson in the highly anticipated sequel, Ellis has fired back with details from a conversation he had with James about who should star in the film (oh okay it's everyone's favorite sparkly vampire Robert Pattinson). Also, get a look at Pattinson's gorgeous Dior Homme fragrance commercial, directed by the great Romain Gavras.

There's a good Labor Day and S&M joke in here somewhere, but we're still getting coffee in our system so we'll let you figure that one out, but it looks like the restraints have been put around the first cast member for your Mom's mostly highly anticipated erotic drama ever, "Fifty Shades Of Grey."

Casting rumors for "Fifty Shades of Grey," Universal's adaptation of the surprise literary smash that started out life as online "Twilight" fan fiction, have been swirling since the rights were snapped up last year. Initial contenders Emma Watson and Elizabeth Olsen downplayed rumors before being ruled out entirely, and speculation about Kristen Stewart and Keira Knightley proving just as baseless. But with Sam Taylor-Wood officially onboard to direct, a cast needs to be established quickly, with a release date less than a year away. The latest actress who could be up for the role: Dakota Johnson, who starred in small, buzzy roles in both "21 Jump Street" and "The Social Network" before anchoring a short-lived Fox sitcom called "Ben and Kate," at least according to The Wrap.

It's a been a little while since we've had any news surrounding the "mommy porn" adaptation, "Fifty Shades Of Grey." While the brewing movie gained a director this summer in Sam Taylor-Johnson, casting continues to elude fans, with only rumor and speculation kicking around at the moment. We've seen a number of names tossed around thus far for the leads of Christian and Anastasia—Felicity Jones, Emma Watson, Stephen Amell, Elizabeth Olsen, Alex Pettyfer, Shailene Woodley, Alicia Vikander—but it's basically been a mix of wishful thinking. But now you can tell your Mom to start considering a couple of other folks.

It's no secret that Hollywood wants you to pay more to watch their movies. You might recall that Paramount recently tested selling $50 tickets to "World War Z" in select theaters, giving buyers the chance to see the movie two days early, and walk away with a bunch of swag including a digital download of the film. And though Universal's plan to make "Tower Heist" available on premium VOD three weeks after release for the bargain price of $59.99 was kiboshed after Cinemark threatened to boycott the movie, overseas studio are testing those waters. Variety recently reported that in South Korea, Disney and Sony have put movies online or on VOD between three and five weeks after theatrical release, with “Django Unchained,” “Wreck-It Ralph” and “Brave,” among the titles testing the waters. And now rumors of that approach coming stateside are cropping up again.

Well, the long, hot, sweaty, kinky, naughty wait is over and a director has been found to tie up audiences cinematically and bring them to Pleasure Town in the big screen adaptation of "Fifty Shades Of Grey." Nope, it's not more interesting choices like Gus Van Sant or Joe Wright, but instead it's Aaron Taylor-Johnson's better half.

Deadline were pretty miffed last week when other sites went forward with the news that Joe Wright was in the frontrunner position to direct "Fifty Shades Of Grey." It wasn't quite clear what their beef was, other than they didn't get to report it first, and they went on some vague rant about trades "firing a rifle filled with buckshot," when there is nothing Deadline loves more than a good shortlist story. Anyway, they are pretty overjoyed with the latest development.

Perhaps the trickiest adaptation cooking in Hollywood at the moment is the big screen version of "Fifty Shades Of Grey." Yes, the fan fiction turned erotica bestseller film adaptation will likely increase handcuff sales, but the question is, who should direct? While there has been lots of rumors on the casting front, we've only really heard about Gus Van Sant making a pitch for the gig by shooting a test sex scene with Alex Pettyfer, but a few more names have popped up.

Listen, we didn't like typing out that headline anymore than you liked reading it, but it seems the erotic drama train that is "Fifty Shades Of Grey" is going to keep right on rolling. As you know, Universal paid a staggering $3 million for the rights to the book last year, but so far, development has been quiet. Kelly Marcel ("Saving Mr. Banks") is writing the script, while "The Social Network" producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are shepherding the project. So this bit of news is an interesting turn of events.
