For a while now, Disney has employed a home video strategy that has paid off in spades. The studio's "vault" system makes titles available for a short window of time on home video, before they are pulled from stores and kept locked up for years until Disney decides to re-release it to great fanfare and even greater sales. This fall the studio tried a new tactic, a 3D converted theatrical re-release before the home video bow. The result? A nearly $100 million domestic haul for "The Lion King (in 3D)" before it's latest BluRay bow and a huge wake-up call to the rest of the industry who suddenly realized there is all kinds of money to be made from rehashing beloved tentpole and franchise films.

'Pirates Of The Caribbean 5' Apparently Aiming To Start Production In Summer 2012It's easy to forget what a roll of the dice Marvel took in casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in "Iron Man." At the time, the actor was still best known for his checkered and controversial past, and the studio was concerned about attaching Robert Downey Jr. to one of their centerpiece franchises as any bad behaviour would put not only the box office into jeopardy, but sequels, licensing opportunities and more. And while Johnny Depp certainly isn't a bad boy, it's that kind of thinking that still dominates the executives overseeing lucrative, four-quadrant franchises, and they will do anything to protect the wholesome, family image that has allowed them to print money.

No, Really, SeriouslyDerek Zoolander, Greg Focker, Tugg Speedman, White Goodman, Chas Tenenbaum, Maury Finkle...Edith Wharton? Yeah, something in there doesn't fit, and we just double checked the calendar and this isn't April Fool's Day, so it must be real. Ben Stiller is directing a period horror film "The Mountain." And it's based on characters from Edith Wharton's novel about a young girls' sexual awakening, "Summer." And no, we're not fucking kidding.

When we last talked to Ray Stevenson, star of "Punisher: War Zone," he revealed that the rights to the character, adapted into financially unsuccessful movies by New World Pictures, Artisan and Lionsgate, had returned to Marvel. He suggested there were plans to utilize the brand again, and that he may be involved. We're not sure about that last part, but the character is set to appear again, this time on Fox television. Because what better place for a trigger-happy, murdering vigilante than the home of Animation Domination?

The past year has seen the boxing movie get a little bit of a resurgence. Of course, there was David O. Russell's "The Fighter," which jumped late into the Oscar race last year and went on to nab statutes for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, and for the past two weeks, Hugh Jackman's robot boxing flick "Real Steel" has stayed stead on top of the box office. Now, fresh-out-of-bankruptcy MGM are looking to get going on a project that does not have a hobbit or James Bond in it, picking up the rights to "Southpaw," which will have Sony distributing the film.
