Rock 'n roll history is littered with bands that should have been more famous, that were talented far beyond what record sales indicated and more influential than any comparable arena packing artist. But few of them have endured and continue the way Big Star does. And while they'll continue to fight to get recognized alongside bigger acts of the 1970s, the upcoming "Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me" will hopefully finally secure their place in history.

The Desolation Of Smaug, Hobbit, Legolas
It seems so long ago when there was genuine excitement for "The Hobbit" franchise, with Peter Jackson taking the reins, and two movies promising to bring audiences back to Middle Earth. But then two got stretched to three, there was that whole 48 frames-per-second thing and then when "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" arrived it...well, it was unexpectedly disappointing to some degree. While the LOTR series certainly stretched it legs, for the first time the bloat was really felt, and perhaps indicated that expanding an already thin novella may not have been the wisest choice. But maybe the middle movie will be the step in the right direction? Either way, we're cautious....

"Ghostbusters"
When talk of “The Shining” documentary “Room 237” began, it made sense that someone would go out and make a documentary about all the crazy and wild theories that existed about the film. It’s such a rich and complex narrative that it’s easy to see how so much could be extracted from it. Now take the same documentary idea and apply it to a simpler film like “Ghostbusters.” How much do you think you could extract from that? Would you be surprised if I told you “Ghostbusters” could potentially be a social commentary on obesity, junk food, ADHD, sex and smoking? It’s the idea that Ivo Shandor (ha ha) is toying with in his documentary “Spook Central."

It premiered at Sundance earlier this year and played at the Directors' Fortnight last month at Cannes, but it seems Sebastian Silva’s “Magic Magic” will not be playing at a theater near you. Instead, it’s going straight to DVD. What’s up with that? Either way, the first official trailer for the psychological thriller has just been posted online, giving you a taste of what the film’s all about.

There is probably no show that engendered as much hate-watching last year as Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom." The highly anticipated show had so much to like about it including a great lead turn from Jeff Daniels, and basically an all around excellent cast (Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, Dev Patel, John Gallagher Jr., Jane Fonda, Chris Messina, Terry Crews, Olivia Munn etc). But damn if Sorkin couldn't out of the way of himself, with the show seemingly unable to go two minutes without speech-ifying, not to mention two separate, and equally tedious romantic subplots that made adults act like junior high teenagers. Can Sorkin right the ship in season two?

Blue Jasmine
Well, it's been twelve months, so it's time for another Woody Allen film. This time around it's "Blue Jasmine," and no, he's not in exotic Barcelona, stuffy London or the touristy Rome. Instead, he's in San Francisco for the first time, and the results look pretty great.
