If either candidate wants to win our votes in November, there's one very simple way to our hearts: amending the constitution to ban the use of trailers for trailers. A recent and insidious invention of Hollywood marketing departments, we can see the appeal from their point of view -- they get all the eyes keen for a first look at footage, but also get to drag out the anticipation and buzz for an extra few days. It's become increasingly commonplace over the last year (to the extent that even a smallish picture like "Looper" does it, and the latest to do so is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th President of these United States.

The world of classical music isn't one that's explored often in the movies, but when it is, it can often prove prime awards territory -- think of "Amadeus" or "Shine," which each featured composers and musicians, and which each picked up Oscars (or in the case of the former, several) for their trouble. And that certainly seems to be the hope of Yaron Zilberman's drama "A Late Quartet," which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival tonight.

We must say that we have a certain soft spot for hardboiled British crime thrillers (everything from "The Long Good Friday" to "RockNRolla"), so it's not going to take a lot to sway us to the particular charms of "Wasteland," the debut feature from writer/director Rowan Athale, which is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival tonight. (You guys have your tickets?)

There are a number of high-profile classic literary adaptations coming out in the next few months, including (but not limited to) Joe Wright's stage-bound "Anna Karenina," Mike Newell's stately "Great Expectations," and "Fish Tank" director Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Heights." We're not sure why people aren't really talking about Arnold's adaptation -- it was one of the absolute highlights of Venice last year for us -- but hopefully after this new trailer (courtesy of Vulture), they will be.

Among some higher profile competition, one of our editor-in-chief's favorite films from his time in Telluride last weekend turned out to be "Ginger & Rosa," a coming-of-age tale from director Sally Potter ("Orlando"). Probably the most accessible film to date from a filmmaker whose last picture was shot on a cellphone (2009's "Rage"), it's a Bildungsroman set in 1960s Britain with Elle Fanning and newcomer Alice Englert (the daughter of Jane Campion) as two best friends discovering protest, sex and betrayal together. With Alessandro Nivola, Christina Hendricks, Oliver Platt, Timothy Spall, Jodhi May and Annette Bening among the top-notch supporting cast, it was the best little surprise of the festival, a film that's "lovely and devastating, challenging yet worthwhile."

Of all the 150 or so world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival, which is getting underway as we speak, the one we're perhaps most curious about is "Cloud Atlas." An epic adaptation from the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer of David Mitchell's excellent best-seller, the film spans thousands of years, with six separate storylines featuring an all-star cast of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, Doona Bae, James D'Arcy, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving, Keith David, Susan Sarandon and more, playing multiple roles of different genders and races in a genre-hopping, independently produced epic.

Starring Penelope Cruz and Emile Hirsch, the Italian-made picture "Twice Born" isn't on everyone's radar just yet, perhaps because it's an internationally produced picture. But that may be about to change, as the film is debuting at the Toronto Film Festival later this week.

Whoa. We were expecting the Barry Levinson-directed found footage eco-horror flick "The Bay," produced by the "Paranormal Activity" team of Jason Blum, Oren Peli and Steven Schneider, to be something of a mild curiosity. After all, the 70-year-old director of "Diner" (which Vanity Fair recently profiled on its thirty year anniversary), hasn't had a truly buzz-worthy movie in a while, and the other movie made with the 'Paranormal' team around the same time (Rob Zombie's "Lords of Salem") hasn't even been picked up for distribution yet. Well, after watching the trailer we're more than intrigued, we're ready to pre-order our tickets now.

"Taken" was an unexpected hit when it was released in 2008, turning formerly serious actor Liam Neeson into an unlikely action icon and legitimizing (to a degree, at least), French filmmaker Luc Besson's place as a kind of Euro-trash Roger Corman. Well, a sequel has finally been shaped, all these years later, and based on the latest "internet trailer" (complete with winky Neeson introduction), it looks like it's keen to recapture the same junky fun of the original.

Sorry, but every time we hear "Hansel" all we can think of is Will Ferrell following it up with "So hot right now." But whether or not the delayed "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" is "hot" remains to be seen, but judging from this first trailer we're thinking....not.
