Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Though Tom Clancy sadly passed way yesterday (check out feature on his best and worst films), marketing campaigns are usually plotted out long in advance, and while some raised an eyebrow at Paramount's supposed insensitivity at dropping the first poster for the movie as the news of the author's death was circulating, it was probably just a bad coincidence. And nevertheless, the campaign must soldier on -- now aided somewhat with Clancy's passing making headlines around the world -- and the first trailer for the terribly titled "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" is here.

Machete Kills,
"Machete Kills" continues its onslaught of marketing, but is it really doing anything to stoke excitement at this point? Either you're down with Sofia Vergara shooting bullets from her breasts or not, but either way, perhaps some of you on the fence might be convinced by this latest effort.

Summer might be over, and the leave may be changing, but that doesn't mean Hollywood has given up entirely on popcorn thrills. This fall will still have a couple of offerings worthy of summer spectacle, and perhaps the biggest of them all is Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug." And promising returning faces from "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy and a big fucking dragon, this middle chapter in a new J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy could be the escapist fantasy of the season.

While the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" and the epic romance "Blue Is The Warmest Color" have dominated the post-Cannes conversation, one film that deserves just as much love is Hirokazu Kore-eda's "Like Father, Like Son." The film landed to wins on the Croisette, taking home the Jury Prize along with a Special Mention from the Ecumenical Jury, and jury president Steven Spielberg clearly was taken with the film, with his longtime home DreamWorks snapping up the remake rights. But before we see what the American take on this story is, a brand new U.K. trailer is here to remind you that the original is the real deal.

After walking into the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year with his utterly awful thriller/police procedural "Shield Of Straw" (our review), it was a reminder that for all of the Japanese auteur's frenetic, groundbreaking films, he has just as many that are forgettable stinkers. The hit to miss ratio for the filmmaker tends to be pretty balanced, and while we'll have to see just where "Mogura no Uta" ends up, there's no denying it hints at the energy and verve of some of his better movies.

So what do we watch now that "Breaking Bad" is over? Well, the good news is that television is going through a bit of renaissance with new, promising shows continuing to arrive like clockwork. And in a couple of months, Frank Darabont—who helped launch the phenomenon "The Walking Dead"—will try to achieve the same success with the gangster world in his new event series, "Mob City." Two new TV spots have dropped that certainly turn up the heat on our anticipation for this one.

When Steve McQueen's "12 Years A Slave" won the Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award, we were slightly surprised—given that the prize generally tends to lean toward more crowd-pleasing movies—but we weren't surprised to see Stephen Frears' "Philomena" take one of the runner-up slots. The film has been warmly received at Venice, Telluride and Toronto, and now it's headed to theaters, where The Weinstein Company are surely hoping it can turn out some hardware for them during the awards season.

Foxcatcher
To all the prognosticators who have already sat back and considered the awards season over, time to wake up. Bennett Miller, who has gone two-for-two with Best Pictures nominations for "Capote" and "Moneyball," returns with "Foxcatcher" and goddamn if he doesn't look like he's back in top form.
