Draft Day
If there's a running theme in Kevin Costner's films for 2014, it's recruitment. In "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," the title says it all with Costner enlisting Chris Pine for some covert action, then in "3 Days To Kill" the actor himself is hired to kick some ass, Euro style. And then later on the spring, Costner will head downfield for "Draft Day" where the thrill of the titular event will be turned cinematic.

Few can match the intensity with which David Ayer captures the lives of cops doing their job on some very tough streets, delivering a handful of efforts either as a writer ("Training Day," "Dark Blue") or director ("End Of Watch," "Harsh Times") that seem to get more documentary-like with each movie. And that focus on realism is very much on display in the latest trailer for "Sabotage," though the tale is pure B-movie.

Girls Lena Dunham Zosia Mamet Jemima Kirke Allison Williams
To be young, neurotic, creative and adrift in New York City... Those are just a few flavors of the lives of single young women that Lena Dunham brings to the small screen in "Girls," her much discussed semi-controversial HBO show. And while some have christened the program as the new "Sex & The City," Dunham has pushed way beyond any boundaries set by that show.

Transcendence Wally Pfister Rebecca Hall Paul Bettany
"....singularity, is a theoretical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization, and perhaps human nature. Since the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable." So goes the the first couple lines of the Wikipedia entry on the subject, and the question is: can Wally Pfister turn that thematic material into a big screen, mainstream success in "Transcendence"?

The Best Offer
While ordinarily we'd totally understand anyone's excitement for the latest from Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore ("Cinema Paradiso," "The Star Maker," "Malena") you might want to temper that a little bit when approaching his latest, "The Best Offer." The film, which has already seen release overseas and played some festival dates, hasn't earned that much buzz, nor did it impress our own Jessica Kiang when she caught it in Berlin earlier this year.

24 Exposures
Does Joe Swanberg sleep? Given his output in the last year or so, it's a legitimate question. With 2013 winding down, he's already delivered "Drinking Buddies" and "All The Lights In The Sky," and he's going to kick off 2014 with two more movies. There's "Happy Christmas," which is headed to the Sundance Film Festival, and later that month, "24 Exposures" will roll into theaters. Whatever he's putting in his coffee, we want it.
