Festival scheduling can be difficult, with overlaps and conflicts ruining even the noblest of intentions. And thus, we were slightly bummed to miss Stephen Frears' "Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight" at the Cannes Film Festival this May. At least at first. Word on the picture was muted at best, and it's safe to say it barely made a ripple on the Croisette. But perhaps this story of an American icon will play better at home than abroad? Well, in just a couple months, you'll be able to judge for yourself.

At this year's Sundance Film Festival, Andrew Dosunmu's "Mother of George" received strong buzz and lots of notice, largely thanks to Danai Gurira's standout performance (which is why we named her one of our 15 Breakout Artists To Watch). Gurira is probably best known as Michonne on AMC's "The Walking Dead" and/or for her stellar film debut in "The Visitor." But reteaming with Dosunmnu—their first film together was "Restless City," which screened at Sundance two years ago—seems to have paid off with a role in a movie that will certainly get her landing on more radars.

Captain Phillips, Tom Hanks
This summer, one of the underrated highlights at the arthouse was Tobias Lindholm's "A Hijacking." It told the fictional tale of a ship taken over by Somali pirates, and the psychological toll it takes on both the hostages and company negotiating for the ship and the lives of the men on board. One of the most striking aspects of the film was that it kept the violence out of frame — most notably, the actual hijacking itself — humanizing both perpetrators and the victims all in one go. Granted, with Paul Greengrass at the helm of "Captain Phillips," one wouldn't expect he'd have the same approach but for those worried it would a one-sided tale, this new trailer reveals that's not the case.

It's a bit surprising that it has taken this long for a movie to come around that takes a stab at capturing the punk spirit and music history made down at New York City's famed club CBGB in the '70s. But it speaks to just how powerful and vital of a time it was that it's still ripe for a big screen telling.

While Cormac McCarthy is undeniably an American literary icon, cinematic adaptations of his work haven't always fared so well. From the great ("No Country For Old Men") to the good ("The Road") to the missed opportunities ("All The Pretty Horses") to the ones no one saw ("The Sunset Limited"), the success rate has been scattered. But this fall will see two movies based on his efforts. Later this month, James Franco will unspool "Child Of God" in Venice, but for the rest of us, it will be "The Counselor" that we'll be seeing first. More importantly, it was written specifically for the screen. And a new trailer is here giving the biggest peek yet at what is one of the fall's biggest films.

Of all the movies set to show their wares this fall, perhaps the one that has been kept the most in the dark is Spike Jonze's "Her." The set photos that have circulated certainly don't betray anything of what his approach will be, and there have been no official stills, posters, teasers or websites to give up the game. That being said, Jonze did provide a peek to those who were lucky enough to be at the L.A. Film Festival in June, showing two clips from the oddball romance that stars Joaquin Phoenix, Chris Pratt, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and (the voice of) Scarlett Johansson. Ostensibly, the movie is about a man who falls in love with a computer operating system, but as always, it's much more than that.

Thor: The Dark World
While "Thor" was initially perceived as potentially the goofiest possibility in the Marvel universe, the studio quickly made it clear that theirs was a grounded hero, with mythological family issues and galactic romance for an Earthbound woman. And when titling the sequel, "Thor: The Dark World," it's clear that things are going to get both bigger and badder with the second standalone movie. But how does it play out?

Premiering at TIFF way back in 2011 to largely negative reviews, and failing to find a distributor until this past spring, the signs aren't so good for "Winnie Mandela" (formerly known as "Winnie"), the biopic of the wife of the famed South Africa freedom fighter. But perhaps it serves as a curious second half to a double bill for anyone checking out the Idris Elba and Naomi Watts starring "Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom" this fall.

James Gandolfini & Julia Louis Dreyfuss in ENOUGH SAID
It may not be the buzziest film or the biggest awards contender headed to TIFF next month, but high up on our list of highly anticipated pictures is "Enough Said." Why? Seven words: Nicole Holofcener, James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss. And the first trailer has arrived for the movie and indeed, it seems our excitement is warranted.
