The Other Woman
Generally speaking, studio rom-coms have never done a great service to women, usually portraying them as highly emotional or unstable or simply unable to function without a man by their side. And in 2014, that trend continues with "The Other Woman," in which a trio of women decide to invest a lot of time and energy to get vengeance on the dude who was two-timing all of them.

Grand Budapest Hotel, Ralph Fiennes
There was a lot to talk about after the first trailer for Wes Anderson's "Grand Budapest Hotel" dropped earlier this fall. In fact, we did a fairly obsessive and thorough trailer breakdown, that noted, among other things, that the film is shot in three different aspect ratios and is (mostly) set in the 1930s. But there is still much to be unwrapped from the film, so consider this an early Christmas present.

How To Train Your Dragon 2
In the age of quick turnaround sequels, the four year wait for "How To Train Your Dragon 2" seems like an eon. But now a bonafide franchise—not only with a big screen followup, but a small screen offshoot too on Cartoon Network—DreamWorks is ready to cash in the success of the first movie. But can movie magic erupt like so much fire from the dragon's belly twice?

Zac Efron, Neighbors
What happens when one grown man and another slightly grown man can't along when they live next door to each other? Hijinks, and lots of it, if this new trailer for "Neighbors" is anything to go by.

Welcome To Yesterday
What do you call a movie that's coming out in February? Anything you like, as long as you pick one title and stick to it. Seriously, two months from release date is kind of late to be changing around titles, and yet behold, a trailer for a movie called “Welcome to Yesterday," which, as I type, continues to be known on IMDB as “Almanac.” On the other hand, “Welcome to Yesterday” is definitely a punchier title (though I'm having trouble keeping it separate in my head from this year's “Escape from Tomorrow,” to which it sounds like a prequel), and probably a more informative one: for “Welcome to Yesterday” is a movie about time travel.

Penny Dreadful Eva Green
As many thinkpieces and industry veterans have no doubt told you, the small screen—both on actual television and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon—is where the future of mature and thoughtful storytelling lies. Naturally, many filmmakers have migrated over from the big screen world and that trend continues into the next year with filmmakers like Cary Fukunaga and Sam Mendes.

Blended Drew Barrymore Adam Sandler
Oh, the perils of being a female filmmaker in Hollywood. Finally making her directorial debut after a lifetime in front of the camera with 2009’s charming “Whip It,” Drew Barrymore has struggled to launch a feature length follow-up and though she is returning to the romantic comedy well, it’s not in the manner one would hope.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
We'll be the first to admit that prior to "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" we were basically expecting something along the lines of this. But Rupert Wyatt defied expectations, and the rather limp marketing campaign, and delivered one of the most satisfying summer movies in years. His effort was lean, smart and a riff on an existing franchise that felt fresh, without ever being too self-serious. In short, it was a success. But can Matt Reeves—who also worked the impossible with his excellent "Let Me In," a remake of the already solid "Let The Right One In"—pick up the ball and run with it? We're about to find out.

The Double
The pleasures to be found in Richard Ayoade's upcoming "The Double" go far beyond Jesse Eisenberg's dual performance that powers the movie. From the great score by Andrew Hewitt, to the production design from David Crank, every inch of the "Submarine" director's film has been carefully considered and thought through. That it all comes together as a near flawless steampunk comedy/romance/thriller is the icing on the cake.

So, a concert pianist who's suffering from stage fright makes his comeback after a five-year hiatus with a concert, only to find a note on his sheet music, threatening his life if he plays a single note wrong. Such is the premise for "Grand Piano," an upcoming thriller starring Elijah Wood. But lest you think this is a genre exercise without a brain, guess again.
