Labor Day
A criminal on the run, a young boy coming of age and a woman in need of companionship... all of these elements come together in "Labor Day," the latest from Jason Reitman, which is gearing up to hit theaters in a couple months after making a very modest splash at Telluride and Toronto. It's certainly a different animal from the writer/director's previous pictures, and one that brings a couple of our favorite actors together in the lead roles.

Depending on where you land, Takeshi Kitano's brand of bleak, black humor laced gangster nihilism is either right up your alley or not. This writer didn't particularly care for the beautifully shot but empty "Outrage," though Playlist colleague Gabe Toro really liked the sequel when it played at the New York Film Festival last year. And now, it's finally headed to theaters, so you can get a taste yourself of what Kitano has cooked up with the sequel "Beyond Outrage."

It looks like we can stop debating about whether or not this movie is coming, and start anticipating. After some talk that it wouldn't be ready in time, "The Wolf Of Wall Street" is definitely coming by the end of the year. And with Paramount now sorting all of that out, they can start making sure they pack theaters this December, but something tells us they won't have any trouble.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past
After no shortage of rumors, lots of set photos, a stinger at the end of this summer's "The Wolverine," and the return of Bryan Singer to the director's chair, bringing two schools of "X-Men" together for one massive outing, it's time to see if this all works. The the first trailer for "X-Men: Days Of Future Past" has arrived.

While jumping into the minds and memories of people to see what makes them tick isn't necessarily a new narrative idea, it's hard not to argue that Christopher Nolan's "Inception" took that concept to the kind of blockbuster heights that few could've imagined. Which makes it all the more difficulty for similarly styled movies to play in that territory—they will forever been trying to reach that bar. So as much as we like Mark Strong, "Mindscape" just doesn't stack up.

So what happens when you pair fantastical director Michel Gondry with noted linguist Noam Chomsky? Well, it's pretty much as you might expect; a hybrid of their personalities on film, with the filmmaker's whimsy paired with Chomsky's musings in a movie that could only be called, "Is The Man Who Is Tall Happy?"

47 Ronin, Keanu Reeves
As "World War Z" proved this summer, a blockbuster movie going through numerous delays and production woes doesn't automatically add up to a box office bomb. In fact, the zombie thriller was one of Brad Pitt's most successful films of his career, and for audiences at large, the bad blogosphere buzz didn't seem to deter them from buying tickets. So, will the same fate await "47 Ronin"?

So "The Counselor" opened this weekend and flopped fairly hard, but don't worry about Ridley Scott. Not only is he already in production on his Bible movie "Exodus," as per usual, he's got about a half billion projects coming up with his name stamped on them as an executive producer. And this one certainly has us a bit curious.

A moody procedural, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and directed by Cary Fukunaga ("Sin Nombre," "Jane Eyre") for HBO—that should pretty much explain why this is probably one of our most eagerly anticipated shows of 2014. But the fact that the trailers and teasers so far have looked even better than we could've dreamed is only making his an even more exciting prospect. And once again HBO has dropped yet another teaser, and damn, if this doesn't look like a knockout.

The Immigrant
It's been slow going for James Gray's period epic "The Immigrant." The film, which stars Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner, debuted at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where it was up for the Palme d'Or (it lost to "Blue is the Warmest Color"), but since then there hasn't been much news. The Weinstein Company is scheduled to handle domestic distribution, but didn't schedule the lengthy historical drama for awards consideration (some have speculated that the film will go directly to On Demand services) and aside from a few festival presentations, remains largely unseen. Thankfully a November release date is still planned for France, which has provided us with the first-ever trailer for the film (via Elle).
