One thing we resolved early on, having read around on the subject a little: to try, try, try to get through just the first sentence of our review of “Filth,” the Jon S. Baird-directed adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s novel, without mentioning “Trainspotting.” So, obviously, we’re pretty disappointed with ourselves. But disappointment is somewhat the order of the day, unfortunately, as it’s a comparison that occurred to us, not often to the benefit of "Filth," throughout our viewing of the film.

Filth
Booze, pills, sex, alcohol....it's just another die in the life of an Irvine Welsh character, with the "Trainspotting" writer seeing another one of his works hit the big screen in "Filth." And yes, in case the red band nature of the trailer didn't tip you off, this is as dirty as you might expect.

One thing we resolved early on, having read around on the subject a little: to try, try, try to get through just the first sentence of our review of “Filth,” the Jon S. But disappointment is somewhat the order of the day, unfortunately, as it’s a comparison that occurred to us, not often to the benefit of "Filth," throughout our viewing of the film. However, Danny Boyle’s modern classic doth bestride the world of the Irvine Welsh adaptation like a colossus, its shadow seemingly impossible to escape from, so there is a glass-half-full way of looking at it: “Filth” is undoubtedly better than also-rans “The Acid House” and “Ecstasy.” In fact, when it comes to capturing some of the gonzo, amoral, substance-fueled verve that Welsh’s novels can display, “Filth” can take the silver medal with its head held relatively high. And that it can is largely down to two things: all the rest of the cast, and James McAvoy.

So what's the deal U.S. distributors? How come no one has swooped in and bought "Filth" yet? It seems like the perfect fit for someone like IFC Midnight or Drafthouse Films, and we really hope the poor performance of "Trance" isn't the reason folks are cautious on this James McAvoy flick. Because while it's not going to win any awards, it looks like the perfect kind of outlandish, ridiculous Irvine Welsh adaptation we've been waiting for since...well, "Trainspotting."

Filth James McAvoy Imogen Poots
Perhaps other than Cliff Martinez, there are few modern film composers who have crossed over into recognition from the regular music world, quite like Clint Mansell. Creating iconic scores for all of Darren Aronofsky's films, along with "Moon," "Last Night" (one of his more underrated efforts) and this year's "Stoker," his work is distinctive and other unlike anything else out there. And he's continuing to spread his wings in interesting directions.

When are North American audiences going to have a chance to get dirty with "Filth"? While the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel is gearing up for release overseas, there's no hint of it on the fall festival slate stateside, or even the whisper of a distributor. So we'll just have to keep looking at it from afar, and waiting to find out when we'll get our shot.

Seventeen years have passed since Danny Boyle’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s “Trainspotting” and while we’re still waiting for the long-promised sequel, the author has another film adaptation on the way, the accurately-titled “Filth.” Scheduled for release in the U.K. this fall, we’ve got the soundtrack details along with a poster for the film.

Filth James McAvoy
While the much-discussed "Trainspotting" sequel remains a distant hope -- not shooting until 2016 at least, if it all comes together -- there's another Irvine Welsh adaptation coming along that should provide ample booze, pills, sex, general raunchiness and moral depravity to fill any need you might have. "Filth" has dropped yet another red band trailer and it continues to look perfectly wrong and outrageous.

"Trainspotting" was the first Irvine Welsh book to make it to the big screen, and still the best. "The Acid House" has faded into memory, while the forthcoming "Ecstasy" hasn't raised much heat on the festival circuit. And while we patiently await the "Trainspotting" sequel Danny Boyle hopes to make in 2016, "Filth" could be the Welsh movie fans have been waiting for since 1996.
