Musician and composer Clint Mansell doesn't crank out film scores, but when he does, it's always worth paying attention. Even when it's for otherwise forgettable fare like "Faster" or unjustly ignored dramas like "Last Night" (one of the key pieces of which is being used in the trailers for Steven Soderbergh's "Side Effects"), it's worth tracking down. Distinctive and unique, while he may be best known for his work on Darren Aronofsky's films, his discography speaks for itself. And it looks 2013 is going to find us being treated to health dose of Mansell.

We won't be seeing James McAvoy on the big screen in 2012, but by this time next year, he'll have been the centerpiece of quite a few promising films. His slate includes: the thriller "Welcome To The Punch"; the duo of films "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His" and "The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers" alongside Jessica Chastain; and Danny Boyle's art world tale "Trance." And if that's not enough, he'll be getting dirty with "Filth." And we now have our first peek at that movie.

Since Danny Boyle’s adaptation of “Trainspotting” hit screens back in 1995, its source writer Irvine Welsh hasn’t really managed to become a fixture on the big screen. His writing credits have mostly been confined to shorts and TV movies, despite talk of an adaptation his “Trainspotting” sequel, “Porno,” never really going away since that novel was published a decade ago. But this all looks like it will soon change, with Welsh providing updates on a number of his projects via a diary in the Financial Times.

James McAvoy is quietly amassing one of the most interesting filmographies out there. The actor toplined two major tentpoles in 2011 -- "X-Men: First Class" and "Arthur Christmas" -- and now he's quickly gone in the other direction, getting in front of the cameras for Danny Boyle's thriller "Trance," and the gritty Brit crime flick "Welcome To The Punch." And kicking off 2012, he's settling into what be his most challenging effort to date, an adaptation of Irvine Welsh's "Filth." This one has been brewing for a while now, with Jamie Bell boarding over the summer and now with filming set to kick off, the rest of the cast has been solidified, and it's certainly very promising.

Earlier this year, in an interview with The Daily Record, James McAvoy hinted at a tantalizing potential project on the horizon saying, "I'm looking at a part soon, like the second half of this year, that is quite extreme I mean, quite full on mental." While the actor is currently shooting the crime drama "Welcome to the Punch," the premise of that film -- about a London detective whose old nemesis, an armed robber, reappears after five years away -- doesn't sound "quite extreme" or "full on mental." However, one project that has been floating with his name attached is an adaptation of Irvine Welsh's "Filth" and it now seems the long-gestating project is coming together.
