WHen Harry Met Sally
Twenty-five years ago today on July 14, 1989, “When Harry Met Sally” went into limited release (MGM carefully platformed the film, something of a rarity for a major summer studio release even then). It became a giant hit, grossing $92 million in the U.S.—about the equivalent of double that when adjusted for inflation. Rob Reiner’s film, made from Nora Ephron’s script, and following the titular mismatched pair (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) who set out to explore the question of whether a man and a woman can be friends without sex and/or love getting in the way (spoiler: no), left a permanent mark on pop culture, influencing countless romantic comedies that came after. But did it also break the genre?

Originally set to be Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, the Black List-approved “Kitchen Sink”—described as “The Breakfast Club” meets “Zombieland” with vampires and an alien invasion thrown in for good measure—has beefed its cast with some solid comedic forces. Deadline is reporting that Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk and Ian Roberts (the Literal Doctor on “Arrested Development” and “Key & Peele” showrunner) have joined the film in unnamed roles, though it’s highly likely that the roles will be teachers or school administrators, given the high school setting of the genre mash-up.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is joining Jeremy Renner, Rosemarie DeWitt, Michael K. Williams and Paz Vega in Michael Cuesta's "Kill The Messenger." Based on a true story, the film will depict the struggle of investigative journalist Gary Webb, who suffered a smear campaign in the late '90s/early '00s after uncovering how the CIA backed the 1980s Contra rebellion in Nicaragua by allowing the smuggling and distribution of Nicaraguan crack cocaine in California. Gary Webb lost his job after exposing this scheme, fell into depression and eventually committed suicide in 2004. He will be played by Jeremy Renner while Winstead will act as the editor of the San Jose Mercury News, the newspaper where Gary Webb published his contentious articles. The release is set for 2014.

According to a report in Variety, Will Smith is lining up his next role – as an older con artist who teaches a young female con artist (to be played by Kristen Stewart) his thieving ways. The movie, entitled "Focus," is written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who most recently directed the hit comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" for Warner Bros. With an Oscar-contending feature film making the rounds with "Argo," the press obligations that come with it, not to mention the many projects vying for his attention as an actor and director that are too numerous to name here, Ben Affleck is busy. And dude has got to sleep sometime, and it looks like he's taking one project off his plate.

With Kristen Stewart seemingly back with Robert Pattinson and the so-called scandal from this summer behind her, the actress is getting ready to get back in the game. She's on the press trail for "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2," and her junket tour will likely continue for "On the Road" next month. And with Volturi now in the rearview, she's looking at her post-Bella career, and this is a pretty good choice.

Sorry guys and gals, a third reteam for Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone following "Crazy Stupid Love" and the upcoming "Gangster Squad" isn't in the cards. But Ben Affleck? That's a pretty nice consolation prize.

Pairing up hot young things Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in a movie together is a no brainer, and Warner Bros. has done it twice already, first with last summer's hit comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and then in the upcoming (and now undated) "Gangster Squad." And if 'Crazy' directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa get their way, the studio will once again reunite the duo.
