Weekend Box Office: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Collects All-Time Biggest Horror Opening

Clearly, there are some bonafide ad wizards over at Paramount after this weekend’s $54 million performance by “Paranormal Activity 3.” While the franchise appears to have its share of detractors, with some growing tired of the “found footage” subgenre, this picture carried surprisingly-generous critic notices to the all-time biggest horror film opening of all time (besting, natch, “Paranormal Activity 2”). Despite what looks like a down market, count this debut as one of the most genuinely strong this year.

You put out one remake of an '80s movie during a slow weekend, and it’s not a big deal. You put out remakes of two niche early '80s hits on the same weekend, and audiences get the message. This weekend was the clearest example yet of studios offering reheated product, one of which was remains in public memory as a punch line, the other as a cult classic that was ignored by critics and audiences upon its initial release. At least they weren’t expensive.

Kick off your Sunday shoes, dear readers, this weekend it's time to cut loose with "Footloose." And what's that? It's a remake-tastic weekend with "The Thing" also in theaters, if you enjoy your '80s nostalgia with body inhabiting aliens instead of nubile dancing teens. Also, Señor Almodóvar's latest, "The Skin I Live In," and the funnymen trio of Martin, Wilson and Black in "The Big Year."

Craig Brewer Says Seeing The 'Karate Kid' Remake With A Cheering Crowd Inspired His 'Footloose'

Ever since Paramount Pictures announced they would be remaking “Footloose,” the studio has been under almost constant attack from fans of the 1984 original. Their quarrel is not just with who’s involved, but with its very existence: fairly or unfairly, those longtime fans can’t understand why the movie needs updating for modern audiences, not to mention how it could possibly be improved upon. But curiously, Craig Brewer, director of the upcoming remake, initially agreed with the project’s critics.

Once upon a time, there was an outsider who came to a small town of limited imagination. He looked upon the town’s ignorant forces of authority and challenged them, fighting for the oppressed and changing the social order. It’s a story that’s been told countless times in various forms of media, to the point where we take these archetypes pretty seriously. “Footloose” is the latest picture to utilize this familiar framework, and a novice might smirk at the main concept’s compelling hook: a town that has outlawed dance.

Our man across the pond spent this weekend at Empire's Big Screen where among the many films showing off their wares was Craig Brewer's "Footloose," and surprisingly he described the clip by saying, "it’s handsomely shot, the music’s well chosen and the performances aren’t too awful." Well, a fresh trailer has dropped and yes, it's not as wholly offensive as we would've thought, but it's also not very good either.

The studio have had the best year of anyone, taking $2 billion worldwide so far, but there's a sea change coming: the "Transformers" franchise is losing its director and star, and the Marvel movies will be distributed by Disney starting with next summer's "The Avengers."

If you didn't lodge your complaint way back when, there's no point in kvetching now. The "Footloose" remake is signed, sealed and almost delivered. The film that does not star unlikely teen heartthrob Kevin Bacon, or love interest Lori Singer, or have Kenny Loggins' version of the original theme, opens nationwide in theaters on October 14th.

It’s hard to pinpoint when exactly this '80s nostalgia virus seemed to grip the globe in such a breathless ecstasy-hold. Hollywood has already come for "beloved" films from that decade, either in the form of aerobicized remakes starring Kelsey Grammer (“Fame”) or laughable sequels (“Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights”) and no-one spoke out, so we only have ourselves to blame for this long-threatened “Footloose” remake, which is finally coming to fruition. Discerning “Archer” fans will excuse this writer as he invokes another Kenny Loggins song that doesn't share this film's title and ventures that we’re probably careening wildly into "The Danger Zone" with this one.
