Cannes, 2014 Playlist
Time for a little mid-Cannes Palme check-up. Out of a conservative eighteen films playing in competition, there’s only four left to go. In the madness of press lines, while fighting sleepless nights and ignoring growling stomachs, we have managed to see and review all fourteen films and our grades have covered all ranges; from near-failures (“The Captive,” “The Search”) to total winners (“Foxcatcher,” “Mr. Turner”) But that’s just us. Daily magazines at Cannes like Screen International love to pool critics’ opinion into a consensus and analyze who’s got the edge for the Palme. So let’s take a closer look at what’s favored, and what we thought of each one (with a little special attention given to a particular Turkish talkie.)

Foxcatcher
Director Bennett Miller has already proven that he has the uncanny ability to spin exquisite, immersive, intelligent stories from material that on paper might not seem so appealing—we’ll still never quite get to the bottom of why “Moneyball,” a film about baseball sabermetrics should be so rich and engaging. But with "Foxcatcher," he has outdone himself, turning his uniquely meticulous eye to a tiny story in a totally rarefied, specific environment and through whatever alchemy he has perfected, created something so universal and resonant that it feels epic, sprawling, almost ancient in its mythic overtones. “Foxcatcher” is an enormous film.

Foxcatcher
Originally slated to be released last fall, Sony Pictures Classics yanked "Foxcatcher" from the schedule soon after the trailer dropped online, citing Bennett Miller's need for more time to finish the film. Well, it's in the can and playing Cannes (sorry), set to premiere in Competition next week. So what was the hold up? A lengthy post-production process.

Baby Mama
Listen, we love Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. They're two smart, funny women and when brought together, they usually have Voltron-like comedy powers. Their Golden Globes hosting gigs have been a blast, and generally, put them in a room and they'll be the funniest people in it. But taking on "Star Wars: Episode 7"? Good luck.

Cannes you believe it? (Sorry, we're already tired from being up early to cover this.) Thierry Fremaux and co. unveiled the slate for this years Cannes Film Festival (with a couple more titles to come), and yes, that means more images from the films in competition.

Foxcatcher
Just as soon as the first trailer for Bennett Miller's "Foxcatcher" dropped last fall, it was promptly yanked offline, and the scheduled December 20th release date taken off the calendar. Was this the case of a troubled production? The official line was that the director wanted more time to finish the movie, and whatever went on behind-the-scenes, it looks like everyone involved is pleased with the result because this one is headed for the biggest film party of them all.

The 2015 Best Picture Contenders, Premature pics
The star of "Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past" and the singer from 30 Seconds Of Mars are Oscar winners, "12 Years A Slave" beat "Gravity," Adele Tazeem became the most famous non-existent person on the planet, and no one's stopped talking about selfies for about 72 hours. The streets of LA are now full of discarded The Weinstein Company interns, who haven't seen daylight for months and are only capable of saying the words "Everything you are and everything you have is 'cos of that butler." Yep, the 2013/2014 awards season has come to an end.

Annapurna Sizzle Reel Her Spring Breakers American Hustle Foxcatcher
As Sunday's Oscar ceremony rolls closer, Megan Ellison has a lot be proud of. 6 Movies Pushed Into 2014
Movies are dropping like flies from the Oscar season this year. Or rather, that seems to be the conventional wisdom out there as a handful of pictures have moved out of the awards season, switched dates or been punted into 2014. And you’ve heard time and time again that it’s a crowded season this fall and winter. And it is, but it’s really no more crowded than any other year -- this prestige season is always busy and there are always casualties and movement. Sure, the Oscar landscape is changing, and there’s been seismic shifts under our feet. George Clooney’s “Monuments Men” is now landing in February, what everyone thought was a surefire Oscar nominee in “Foxcatcher” has moved to unknown lands in 2014 and several other pictures thought to be 2013 Academy contenders have also adjusted plans.

Foxcatcher
To all the prognosticators who have already sat back and considered the awards season over, time to wake up. Bennett Miller, who has gone two-for-two with Best Pictures nominations for "Capote" and "Moneyball," returns with "Foxcatcher" and goddamn if he doesn't look like he's back in top form.
