Though we thought "Foxfire," the latest from Laurent Cantet (the director of arthouse hit and Cannes winner "The Class") might have made a bigger splash when it premiered at TIFF in the fall, it arrived and left with a bit of a whisper. The film is still without North American distribution, a bit of an oddity considering it's based on Joyce Carol Oates' classic book, but it is rolling out overseas and hopefully that will give someone the push to take it on.

Though we got it once before as a 1992 Annette Haywood-Carter film starring a young Angelina Jolie and (eventual) Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis, there's certainly room for improvement. And when you have "The Class" director Laurent Cantent deciding to take on the classic Joyce Carol Oates novel "Foxfire: Confessions Of A Girl Gang," and bring it to the big screen, our interest is piqued.

After the success of working with unknown youths in his Palme d'Or-winning "The Class," Laurent Cantet decided to go down the same path for his latest effort behind the camera, the teen-feminist rebellion tale "Foxfire," adapted once before as a 1992 Annette Haywood-Carter film starring a young Angelina Jolie and Jenny Lewis.

Yeah, we know. We're as surprised as you are. The last we hard about French filmmaker Laurent Cantet's adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' "Foxfire" was when it was announced over a year ago. We were excited by the prospect of the director behind the fantastic Palme d'Or-winning "The Class" as well as "Time Out" and "Human Resources taking on the tale that has most famously already hit the screen in a version starring Angelina Jolie and Jenny Lewis.
