The Noah Baumbach Fanclub was likely pretty disheartened this year. "While We're Young" had casting rumors buzzing around it, but soon went quiet (to make matters worse, he states here that it likely won't go for awhile) and his pilot for Jonathan Franzen's "The Corrections" was ultimately not picked up by HBO.

Shot in near-complete secrecy and unannounced until just this past July, it's suitably consistent that director Noah Baumbach's seventh feature, “Frances Ha,” would also become one of the surprise highlights of the festival circuit this year. Co-written by Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, who also stars, the film already garnered a fantastic reception at Telluride this year (from us included), and now, following a similar performance in Toronto, it appears distribution for the comedy-drama is coming together.

Well, that's a wrap. The 39th annual Telluride Film Festival is in the rear-review mirror and we're already gearing up for TIFF, while Venice winds down. Meanwhile, Telluride organizers are already looking forward to next year: they've announced that the 40th edition of the festival will provide an extra day to expand into a five day affair, starting on a Thursday. Mark your calendars now as surely the festival will be looking to make a splash on their 40th.

For the enterprising mini-majors, studio subsidiaries and indie start-ups, there are three key markets to acquire films: There's Sundance, where only a handful of movies come with distribution already sorted, and everyone hopes to uncover the next "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Precious." Loose, limber and driven by a fierce energy and staccato/pause rhythm we haven't seen previously from this filmmaker, Noah Baumbach's sublime "Frances Ha" is a fresh and vivacious near-reinvention of the director/writer's comedic milieu. An enchanting riff on friendship and the late-20-something right of passage into true adulthood, while the buoyant comedy does focus on those who still don't have their shit together, it is however, leagues more rich and emotionally layered than the average arrested development dilemma that seems to pervade 20/30-something comedies of late.

Looks like we were a dismal 1 for 5 on our Telluride wishlist/prediction piece, but no matter as there is still a lot to get excited about. The folks out in Colorado have unveiled their slate with the festival kicking off tomorrow, and it's a great mix of premieres and gems from Venice and Cannes.

With the fall film festival season now off and running and Venice underway, we've already packed our bags and adjusted our calendars to fit as many movies as we can. However, in the case of the Telluride Film Festival, we and all the other attendees don't know what's playing until the day of. Yep, that's right, Telluride won't unveil their slate until August 31st, so curious moviegoers will have to live by the luck of the draw.

One of the best pleasant surprises of the initial Toronto International Film Festival announcement this morning? The surprise reveal of a new Noah Baumbach film. While Baumbach, the filmmaker behind "The Squid and the Whale," hinted to us in a recent interview that something was up his sleeve, we didn't imagine it was something we'd be seeing so soon.

So this morning, Variety spilled the beans on the first wave of announcements for the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, and... boy, it looks like a great year. So much so that we wonder how much is left over for other fall festivals like Venice or Telluride. A few of the most anticipated films won't be world premieres, suggesting that they'll be popping up elsewhere shortly before, but we count 40 films announced so far as world premieres, among them films that are sure to make major waves.
