Where's Megan Ellison when you need her? Still remaining unmade, and looking more and more likely to remain so, is Charlie Kaufman's ambitious, musical, Hollywood satire "Frank Or Francis." Even though it's housed at Sony, in this tentpole-heavy world, the movie unsurprisingly hasn't been greenlit, despite amassing a cast of willing players including Jack Black, Nicholas Cage, Steve Carell, Elizabeth Banks, Kevin Kline, Catherine Keener, Paul Reubens and Jacki Weaver. And earlier this summer, things weren't exactly looking good as reps for the director told us the project was "postponed" for the moment. And we figured it was financing that was keeping things from getting rolling.

The film blogosphere loves screenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman, and with good reason. His mindbending screenplays and films ("Synecdoche, New York," "Adaptation," "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") are surreal, challenging, hilariously bizarre, profound and moving, so he is beloved by many cinephiles who value something other than the cookie-cutter norm. Consequently, when quotes from actress Elizabeth Banks started spreading today about the viability and potential death of Kaufman's next project "Frank Or Francis" -- an ambitious satire of Hollywood set to music, where a film director feuds with a blogger -- people understandably got worried.

More than thirty years after Peter Weir's phenomenal, moody drama "Picnic At Hanging Rock" first graced screens, two supporting players from the film are set for major breaks stateside, with veteran duo Jacki Weaver and John Jarratt lining up roles in two of the biggest projects currently going around.

Lionsgate are making sure they aren't caught with their pants down when "The Hunger Games" series inevitably comes to an end. Even though the first film is still in theaters, they aren't wasting any time in making sure they have another big hit franchise to keep the blockbuster money train going once "Mockingjay" brings the adventures of Katniss to a close. And the answer to Suzanne Collins seems to be Patrick Ness, and Lionsgate are hoping his "Chaos Walking" series of books can work the same magic. In order to attract the best talent possible to the material, they're picked a pretty brilliant screenwriter to get the ball rolling.

After high-profile roles in commercial fare such as “School Of Rock,” “Nacho Libre” and “The Big Year,” Jack Black has tapped into a series of smaller and more idiosyncratic opportunities, starting with Richard Linklater’s true-crime dramedy “Bernie.” But the comedian and actor has even bigger challenges on the horizon with “Frank Or Francis,” Charlie Kaufman’s follow-up to his 2008 film “Synecdoche, New York.” While appearing at the SXSW Film Festival for the local premiere of “Bernie,” Black revealed he didn’t know how soon shooting was set to begin, but he characterized the film to The Playlist as an incisive portrait of celebrity culture.

It just keeps getting better and better. Only a day after Charlie Kaufman's wildly ambitious "Frank Or Francis" landed its first female leads in Kate Winslet and Catherine Keener, another exceptionally talented thesp is coming on board.

Just when we were wondering if production on Charlie Kaufman's ambitious, zany, satiric musical "Frank Or Francis" might have hit the skids, the project has received some new life, adding two of our favorite actresses to the cast.  Vulture reports that Kate Winslet (coming off Emmy and Golden Globes wins for her excellent turn in "Mildred Pierce") and Kaufman regular Catherine Keener ("Synechdoche, New York," "Adaptation," "Being John Malkovich") are coming aboard the film.

When a screenwriter is admired, it is often based on how well he or she can construct a story (Robert Towne, William Goldman) or write dialogue (Aaron Sorkin, David Mamet), but Charlie Kaufman is the rare screenwriter who is revered for the strength of his ideas. He certainly feels like the first writing auteur, and it’s appropriate that he began directing his own scripts with 2008’s "Synecdoche, New York" (That’s not to disparage the great films Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry made out of Kaufman scripts, although as far as “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” goes, the less said, the better. Director George Clooney and Kaufman infamously butted heads over that film.)

Charlie Kaufman -- the writer behind "Being John Malkovich," "Adaptation" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" -- is no stranger to high concepts. But believe us, nothing you've seen from him before will prepare you for the absurd and musical-heavy Hollywood send up "Frank or Francis."

But "In The Broadest Possible Sense Only"; We've Read It And Have Details On This Wonderfully Ambitious & Bizarre ScriptScreenwriter/director Charlie Kaufman is a busy man. After taking a detour to give a script polish on "Kung Fu Panda 2," the writer behind "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" and the director of "Synecdoche, New York," is back at it in full force. The filmmaker has two scripts in the can: one, an untitled political satire that his old co-hort Spike Jonze is going to direct starring Joaquin Phoenix, and another that Kaufman will once again get behind the camera for called "Frank or Francis." We already know that it will star Nicolas Cage, Steve Carrell and Jack Black and that it's a satire of Hollywood where a film director feuds with a blogger.
