Frank
Are some diamonds in the rough so special they can only exist on the fringes? When a rare species enters the ecosystem of the mainstream, does its fragile, sensitive needs break down amongst the polluted elements around it? These are some of the ideas expressed in “Frank,” an off-the-wall and terrific paean to the misfits and freaks of the world, their dreams, visions and togetherness.

Frank, Sundance
It's been quite a day already for movie lovers. Not only were the Oscar nominations announced this morning, but the Sundance Film Festival officially kicked off today, where the journey will begin for many of next year's Oscar contenders. And among the plethora of our 30 Most Anticipated Films in Park City, the most intriguing might just be "Frank." Seemingly ticking all the boxes in our wheelhouse that includes music, original comedy and things starring Michael Fassbender, it's one we're eagerly looking forward to over the coming days.

2014: Sundance Most Anticipated
So yes, tomorrow brings the Oscar nominations (and you can take a look at our predictions one last time here). But if there were ever any doubt, there's a double reason that tomorrow might be the biggest day of the year in the movie calendar, because in a piece of scheduling that's somewhat infuriating to those of us who like sleeping occasionally, Thursday also marks the start of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Thirty years on from its founding, Robert Redford's little Utah get-together remains the premier venue for American independent film, and while the quality of the line-up remains... inconsistent, it also invariably sees the arrival of a whole host of movies that will be talked about for the twelve months that follow.

New Image Arrives Of The Cast Of Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac,' Part One Opens In Denmark On Christmas Day

Cannes is underway, and it's a quieter place without Lars Von Trier there. Despite guesses from some, the Danish auteur isn't on the Croisette with his latest, "Nymphomaniac," but it's not because of the outrage he caused in 2010 with his comments about Hitler, but instead because the sex-laced two-part epic simply isn't ready. Still, there is a presence of some kind, as the films' backers have used the festival to unveil an image that shows the film's starry cast in various suggestive positions.

Over the last few years, we've seen Michael Fassbender in a number of different guises; British agent disguised as a Nazi, Roman warrior, Gothic romantic lead, metal-bending Holocaust-surviving mutant, repressed psychotherapist, rampant sex addict, treacherous secret agent, and Peter O'Toole-ish android. But his next project promises to show him in a guise that we've never seen before from the Irish-German actor.

Well, you can put this on our list of movies we'll be keeping an eye out in 2013. A comedic rock biopic starring Michael Fassbender and two of this year's scene stealers Domnhall Gleeson ("Anna Karenina") and Scoot McNairy ("Killing Them Softly," "Argo")? Yeah, sign us up. And it looks like one more solid name is joining "Frank" as cameras are set to begin rolling soon.

Since finally starting to gain a bit of wider attention in 2010’s “Monsters,” Scoot McNairy has had a fantastic 2012, with roles in “Killing Them Softly” and “Argo.” He’s got a lot of promising projects lined up, too. There’s Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave,” Gus Van Sant’s “Promised Land,” and “Non-Stop” alongside Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore, all coming up for the actor.

Well, we've always said that Michael Fassbender could probably do anything. The chameleonic actor has been a mutant, a robot, an IRA prisoner, a sex addict, a resurrected Nazi ghoul and whatever-the-hell he was in "Jonah Hex." And while almost all of his performances have had wry strains of humor, he's never had to be outright funny. Until now.
