X-Men: Days Of Future Past, Wolverine
You better grab a drink and take a seat — Fox just set a batch of dates for the 2017/18 calendar, and they've got a very tentpole heavy future laid out. And while this is the part where we lament the state of the industry, frankly, it is what it is so let's just break down what they've got coming.

Affleck, Gone Girl
With production in full swing on David Fincher's "Gone Girl," he's now got a release date target to hit (and plenty of time to make it), with 20th Century Fox now slating the thriller for a prime awards season bow. Or is it?

James McAvoy doesn't take the well traveled path, and frankly, his choices all the more interesting for it. Oh sure, he's one of the anchors of the new "X-Men" films, but he's also been using that clout to take on gnarlier roles in movies like Danny Boyle's erotic mindbender "Trance," and the gritty cop flick "Welcome To The Punch." He tips the bottle hard in the upcoming "Filth" and teams with Jessica Chastain for the double romantic drama "The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby" which is headed for TIFF. But Fox still wants to keep him in their blockbuster barn.

Okay, so before we dive into this, let's just recap where the forever busy Guillermo del Toro is at right now. He's got his robots vs. monsters thing "Pacific Rim" hitting theaters this Friday, after which he'll work on the TV adaptation of his novel series "The Strain" for FX through until the end of the year. And then he'll kick off 2014 with his next feature film, the gothic horror "Crimson Peak." But as always, del Toro has about a half dozen irons in the fire, and he's already looking to reteam with his "Crimson Peak" star Benedict Cumberbatch on another project.

The project’s been kicking around for a couple years now, but it looks like a new “Frankenstein” movie is moving closer towards reality. Daniel Radcliffe’s all set to play Igor and Fox has recently given the film an October 2014 release date. Now the studio, along with director Paul McGuigan (“Lucky Number Slevin”), is looking for someone to play Victor Von Frankenstein. The names being thrown around are quite intriguing.

Well, here's one that's been cooking up for a while. Folks with particularly good memories will know that it was last September that word initially surfaced about Daniel Radcliffe and Fox's "Frankenstein" getting together for an electrically charged combination. And now, it's alive.

When Mary Shelley sat down to pen her paramount novel “Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus” in 1818, there was obviously no way she could anticipate that the themes of creation, obsession, and pure evil would continue to echo through the ages almost 200 years later. The impact is certainly most personified on film, with Universal Studios creating our modern vision of Frankenstein’s monster in the form of the Boris Karloff-starring film from 1931. It’s also had its share of C-Level interpretation, inspired films like Stuart Gordon’s splat masterpiece “Re-Animator,” and dazzling stage shows like the recent iteration by Academy Award-winning “127 Hours” filmmaker Danny Boyle. Hopefully the Shelley estate has been receiving some nice checks over the years. Anyways, there’s a few projects gestating about the creature, and now we can add another to the pile.

This past summer, when Guillermo del Toro announced that the similarities between “Prometheus” and his long-gestating “At The Mountains of Madness” had effectively shuttered the project, among the cries of outrage there exists one positive: it allows the director to move on to his other thousand projects waiting in the wings.

While Shawn Levy considered directing it for a while, it appears that Levy moving off the project and directing "The Internship" instead, and Fox hiring "Lucky Number Slevin" helmer Paul McGuigan to direct, has put a new surge of electricity back into the studio's brewing "Frankenstein." And that juice could bring with it a major franchise star to take the lead role.
