Well, here's one that's been cooking up for a while. Folks with particularly good memories will know that it was last September that word initially surfaced about Daniel Radcliffe and Fox's "Frankenstein" getting together for an electrically charged combination. And now, it's alive.

When Mary Shelley sat down to pen her paramount novel “Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus” in 1818, there was obviously no way she could anticipate that the themes of creation, obsession, and pure evil would continue to echo through the ages almost 200 years later. The impact is certainly most personified on film, with Universal Studios creating our modern vision of Frankenstein’s monster in the form of the Boris Karloff-starring film from 1931. It’s also had its share of C-Level interpretation, inspired films like Stuart Gordon’s splat masterpiece “Re-Animator,” and dazzling stage shows like the recent iteration by Academy Award-winning “127 Hours” filmmaker Danny Boyle. Hopefully the Shelley estate has been receiving some nice checks over the years. Anyways, there’s a few projects gestating about the creature, and now we can add another to the pile.

This past summer, when Guillermo del Toro announced that the similarities between “Prometheus” and his long-gestating “At The Mountains of Madness” had effectively shuttered the project, among the cries of outrage there exists one positive: it allows the director to move on to his other thousand projects waiting in the wings.

While Shawn Levy considered directing it for a while, it appears that Levy moving off the project and directing "The Internship" instead, and Fox hiring "Lucky Number Slevin" helmer Paul McGuigan to direct, has put a new surge of electricity back into the studio's brewing "Frankenstein." And that juice could bring with it a major franchise star to take the lead role.

For a brief moment last year, it seemed like Shawn Levy was really intent on making "Frankenstein" his next picture. But as these things sometimes go, the pieces didn't come together and he wound up shooting "The Internship" with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson this summer instead. But "Frankenstein" is still alive, and the project's studio now has a new man tasked to put its nuts and bolts together. (Ha.)

In an impressive bit of synergistic strategizing, the Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Fathom Events will be screening a taped version of last spring's "Frankenstein" stage play for two nights in June. What makes this such a slick move is that it's perfectly tapping into a number of Zeitgeist-catching threads - the play co-stars Benedict Cumberbatch, whose amazing modern day take on "Sherlock" just started airing on PBS in America (seriously, that first episode alone makes Guy Ritchie's movies look even more like frothy kiddy stuff) and is poised for Next Big Thing Status when he stars as the villain in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel next summer and was directed by Danny Boyle, who will serves as the director of the London Olympics opening ceremonies (not too shabby). The play also stars Johnny Lee Miller, who co-stars in this weekend's delightfully bizarre Tim Burton "Dark Shadows" redo.

While some actors take great care in how they appear on screen, shying away from roles in which their faces may be disfigured or seen in a less than glamorous light, don't try and sell that philosophy to Aaron Eckhart. The actor had no hesitation in watching half his face get eaten away in "The Dark Knight" and how he's set to take another big league role in a film that won't exactly let his chiseled features shine.

Says 'Frankenstein' Will Chronicle Victor & Igor In Their '20s Shawn Levy's name might not pop into your head when you think of the most successful directors of recent years, but his track record speaks for itself. While even Levy admits earlier projects like “Pink Panther” and “Cheaper by the Dozen” had their faults, his back catalogue of box offices successes is almost unmatched in the current crop of directors. He's currently riding off three smash hits in a row, with the "Night At The Museum" films and last year's "Date Night." His ability to turn out engaging, popcorn entertainment that is a cut above the usual standard is the reason why Levy seems to be linked to just about every project under the sun. And while he can't direct everything, he continues to develop projects that interest him under his production banner 21 Laps Entertainment. After discussing "Fantastic Voyage" and the "Real Steel" sequel last week, The Playlist caught up with Levy again this week to discuss a few more projects he has in the pipeline.
