After several back-to-back banner years for animation, 2011 turned out to be one of the weakest in memory; Pixar delivered their first stinker with "Cars 2," DreamWorks delivered more of the same with a pair of sequels, and nothing, not even the oddball "Rango" seemed to be enshrined in the hall of fame for the medium.

Looking at back at his films since the start of the 2000s, Tim Burton has done two remakes ("Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" and "Planet of the Apes"), one Broadway adaptation ("Sweeney Todd"), another book adaptation ("Big Fish") and a fairy tale movie ("Alice In Wonderland"). "Corpse Bride" is his last original creation and with the TV-based "Dark Shadows" around the corner, the opportunities to see Burton doing something wholly from his brain seem to be diminishing. So while a full-length version of his 1984 short film "Frankenweenie" might seem a bit underwhelming at first, at least it's a return to world of his own making. And as these first looks at the film from EW reveal, he's full embracing the black-and-white aesthetic that was part of the charm of the original.

'Oz' & 'Frankenweenie' Presentations Are BriefAt this weekend’s D23 convention, Disney hopes to capitalize on the excitement around must-see projects like “The Avengers,” Pixar’s “Brave” and “The Muppets” by presenting a look at their entire slate of releases across all divisions. They opened with a lengthy animation presentation from John Lasseter that was heavy on Pixar (“Planes,” “Brave,” “Monsters University” and two new project announcements) and concluded with a Marvel presentation that, while brief, still managed to set fanboys hearts aflutter with a first extended look at “The Avengers.” In-between Disney faced their greatest challenge in holding audience attention for looks at some lesser known projects.

Look at those two young dudes. Bet they didn't realize at the time that they would both travel through the industry together rising to the top of their respective fields, with Tim Burton one of a handful of name brand directors working today and Danny Elfman as one of the most distinctive composers on the block. Through all the shifts and tides of Hollywood, Burton and Elfman stuck together working together on every one of the director's films except for "Ed Wood" and "Sweeney Todd" and they're not about to change up that dynamic anytime soon.
