If you haven't been watching "Fringe," the admirably madcap Fox sci-fi series co-created by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, well, you have a few weeks to catch up before the fifth and final season (and we suggest you do). Originally a kind of gooier version of "The X-Files," with a liberal dose of Cronenbergian scientific weirdness thrown in, the show has evolved into one of the most imaginative and surprising dramatic hour-longs on television, each season deepening its mythology while raising both the stakes and the emotional content. Not even a move to the Friday night death slot could slow it down creatively. And by the looks of two new trailers released for the new season, it's going to end on a high note.

“Fringe” is fast approaching the premiere of its fifth and final 13-episode season on September 28th, and you’d have to realistically expect that knowing the end is nigh that the show will be doing its best to give the fans the satisfactory denouement that they’re craving. Another J.J. Abrams created show, “Lost,” was in a similar situation to "Fringe" a few years back and Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof went to Comic-Con promising their fans the final season their dedication deserved...and we’ll leave you to decide whether they pulled that off or not. But one thing they were also extremely adamant about was that after the finale they were done with "Lost" for good. That doesn’t seem to be the same for "Fringe" with the cast talking up a potential continuation of the show in Hall H this weekend.

“Fringe” was one of those shows that seemed under threat of cancellation at the end of its fourth season, but it was also one of those shows that had a passionate and vocal fan base who were able to convince Fox to bring it back for a fifth and final season. That final run of 13 episodes will kick off on September 28th and will pick up after the events of the season 4 finale which (SPOILER ALERT) saw the return of Leonard Nimoy’s William Bell, as well as the death and subsequent resurrection of Anna Torv’s Olivia Dunham (SPOILER END). That episode was apparently written as a possible series finale in the event that the show wouldn’t be picked up for a fifth season, but thankfully that wasn’t be the case. We’ve now got a new poster and promo for the final season, which will culminate with the show’s 100th episode.
