From Up On Poppy Hill
Although it's causing something of a storm in Japan, where wartime matters are still controversial, “The Wind Rises,” the latest film from animation legend Hayao Miyazaki (read our review) is already a huge critical and commercial hit, as is par for the course for the great director (if case you hadn’t heard, he’s retiring). His son, Goro Miyazaki, has always been given a much rougher ride with Japanese audiences, often laboring in the shadow of his illustrious father. “From Up on Poppy Hill” marked a serious turning point though, picking up a slew of good reviews in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, as well as a healthy box-office take and the Animation of the Year award at the Japan Academy Prize (the Japanese Oscars.)

There's a certain sense of heightened and/or alternate reality pervading the theater releases this weekend. On the one hand, we have a film about magicians, professionals who create the illusion of having manipulated real world physics; plus, it takes place in Vegas, a city that, unto and of itself, is an entirely other universe. In the other corner is Harmony Korine's new picture, an exploitation flick where the Wizard of Oz leads the starlets of "High School Musical" in a coke-fueled game of Russian Roulette. And then, somewhere in the middle, "Little Miss Sunshine" gets kidnapped by a gasoline-hose-wielding sociopath.

In the world of feature animation, Pixar aside, there are few brands as beloved and treasured as Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki, it's his films that best represent the output that has gained the shingle worldwide attention, thanks to movies like "My Neighbor Totoro," "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away." But at 72 years old, Miyazaki is passing the torch to his son Goro Miyazaki who directs the upcoming "From Up On Poppy Hill."

It seems like just yesterday that a new Studio Ghibli movie was gracing our shores and now we have a trailer for another new Studio Ghibli joint. (We aren't complaining.) This new film, "From Up on Poppy Hill," like February's "Secret World of Arrietty," was written and conceived by Studio Ghibli's Walt Disney equivalent Hayao Miyazaki but not directed by him. Instead, this new film was directed by Miyazaki's son, Goro, who last helmed the studio's beautiful but confounding 2006 fantasy epic "Tales from Earthsea." Thankfully, this new film looks way more down to earth.
