Fruitvale Station
Can you tell that The Weinstein Company is getting ready for Cannes? In the past week they've dropped trailers for "The Butler" and "August: Osage County" and that's all in preparation of a big Cannes presentation for press following last year's unveiling of "Django Unchained," "The Master" and "Silver Linings Playbook." What will be there? Well, that's a Weinstein secret for now, but they'll have plenty to celebrate in the festival as Sundance hit "Fruitvale Station" will unspool for international crowds.

Maybe they were reading our Premature Oscar Predictions? Just days after our series ended, looking way far at the horizon of next year's potential Oscar nominees, The Weinstein Company has dated four films of their late fall awards season hopefuls. Obviously, those films were going to land in Oscar season regardless, but kudos to our features for being on point; Harvey and co. will be driving hard the very films we had touted as potentially strong contenders for next year's Academy season.

The Sundance Film Festival has been underway for a few days now, but the buyers' market has been slow to get moving. It's not entirely surprising; as we documented last week, a run of disappointments has left distributors a little more cautious than in the past, and with few films attracting across-the-board raves, there's further reason to keep the purse strings tightened until most of the major films have screened.

The tragic death/murder of Trayvon Martin has been at the top of headlines in recent weeks, drawing controversy and criticism as officials have moved painfully slowly in arrested George Zimmerman, or even doing the basic groundwork of investigation, in a case that many feel has the markings of a racially motivated attack. But sadly, Martin is not the only young black man in recent memory to be shockingly killed by in a heated incident. On New Year's Day in 2009, the 22 year-old Oscar Grant was pulled off a rowdy BART train at the Fruitvale station, and was shot in the back, dying from his wounds, with cellphone footage capturing the entire event. Officer Mehserle was sentenced to two years for the crime, and was released on parole last June. Events bear a general similarity to the Trayvon incident, and now a movie is on the way.
