There are certain actors for whom any attempt to follow the logic or reason in their career choices can only end in failure. What drives Al Pacino to follow playing himself in Adam Sandler comedy "Jack & Jill" with a Phil Spector biopic? How does Samuel L. Jackson film both Cormac McCarthy adaptation "The Sunset Limited" and direct-to-video actioner "Arena" in the same year? At least Nicolas Cage owes the government millions in taxes, but some of these elder statesman seem to delight in veering between the sublime and the ridiculous, and one of the greatest offenders is Bruce Willis.

Dwayne Johnson Tweets Early Look (Sort Of, Not Really) At His Role In 'G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation'So, the first trailer for the $200 million "Battleship" arrived last week and yes, it was awful. For a movie that is supposed to be about an alien invasion or something, it starts off with a shot of Brooklyn Decker's boobs and gets into some kind of bad boy/good girl romance tale before getting to Captain Liam Neeson telling his crew to fire all their weapons at the incoming creatures. But missing in all this was any real face time with Rihanna, the pop star who is making her movie debut in the blockbuster film.

The long wait for this inevitable piece of news is over. After playing coy forever, and now riding high off the success of "Super 8," Deadline reveals that J.J. Abrams has finally committed to directing the long awaited "Star Trek 2." But as expected, his delay and quest for the right story and script have caused plans at Paramount to move around a bit.

Oh man, our favorite tentpole movie to report on "G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes" -- mostly because we love looking up the character backgrounds given to these toys -- has founds its villain.

'Star Trek 2' Confirmed To Have Slipped From Summer 2012The train for the "G.I. Joe" sequel "G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes" keeps on barreling forward: it's only a few days since D.J. Cotrona and RZA came on board the pared-down, recast sequel to the 2009 toy adaptation, and now another no-offence-but-not-exactly-A-list actor has signed on, with Deadline reporting that "Friday Night Lights" veteran Adrianne Palicki has signed on to next summer's follow-up, which "Step-Up 3D" and "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" director Jon Chu is helming.

Despite being an ugly, cartoony, badly-acted mess with very little to recommend it, 2009's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" managed a fairly impressive $150 million gross in a late summer slot, which is the very least of an excuse that franchise-happy Paramount needed to greenlight a sequel. But that doesn't mean that they're not going to shake things up: director Stephen Sommers clashed with the studio on the original, and has departed for the supernatural thriller "Odd Thomas," while an eye on the bottom line has seen most of the original cast members, including Marlon Wayans, Christopher Ecclestone, Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid and, most unsurprisingly, the since-gone-supernova Joseph Gordon-Levitt, put out to pasture.

While we sort of don't really care about "G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes" this writer likes these stories if only because it's an excuse to look up the elaborate back story some dumb toy solider was given. It's kind of amazing that somebody actually sat down and thought these out no matter how cornball they are.

Dwayne Johnson has been an actor divided between making paydays with terrible family movies while trying to build up a more respectable career as an action star. Case in point: while he starred in "Fast Five" this year, his next film to hit theaters will be "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." But it looks like another big sequel in 2012 will find the former wrestler taking a big role.

First audiences watched "The Rise Of Cobra." Now they'll have to take cover, as the subtitle for "G.I. Joe 2" will be the dramatic, tonally appropriate "Cobra Strikes." At least, that's according to the Louisiana Entertainment office (via NOLA), who erroneously leaked that the production would begin in New Orleans this August and stretch through November. The offices now claim that there has been no decision made as to shooting locations, but "G.I. Joe 2: Cobra Strikes" seems to be the title. At least for now.
