With “Silent Hill: Revelation 3D,” filmgoers are about to learn what TV fans have known for quite awhile now about “Games Of Thrones” actor Kit Harington. As the smoldering Jon Snow, Harington has earned himself quite the fan base, so few would be surprised to know that he’s hoping to branch out into film in a major way.

Malin Akerman has had a bit of an unlucky run on the big screen in 2012, with "Wanderlust" and "Rock Of Ages" both underperforming, and the upcoming "Stolen" with Nicolas Cage looking like....well, a Nicolas Cage movie. But she's hoping to cap off the the year on a stronger note. The actress is headed to the small screen for some guest stints on ABC's "Suburgatory." The episodes, set to air near Thanksgiving and Christmas, will find her popping up as the "beautiful and free-spirited singer-songwriter" mother of Tessa (Jane Levy), with whom she hopes to form a relationship and put her troubled past behind her. "Suburgatory" returns in October.

"Game Of Thrones" already has one of the most expansive and impressive casts in the history of television. Essentially picking up the slack that "Harry Potter" left in terms of propping up the British acting industry, the show hasn't just made stars (with names like Richard Madden, Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke coming to serious Hollywood attention), but also given great showcases to veteran character actors -- people like Donald Sumpter, Stephen Dillane and Liam Cunningham have given show-stealing turns over the last two seasons.

In between being one of the more exciting young directors we have at the moment, Rian Johnson has been keeping his helming muscles sharp by working on some of the more acclaimed TV series of the last few years. In the four years between "The Brothers Bloom" and the upcoming "Looper," Johnson helmed a divisive third-season episode of "Breaking Bad" entitled "Fly" (one of this writer's favorites on the show), as well as a cracking installment of the short-lived and much-missed "Terriers."

The cult of "Game Of Thrones" grows ever stronger. Initially anticipated principally by fans of George R.R. Martin's books, the HBO series has won over more and more viewers since debuting last April, including many who would never have dreamed that they'd become hopelessly addicted to a fantasy series. And in part, it's thanks to the terrific cast, featuring a mix of veteran character actors (including the Emmy-winning Peter Dinklage), and bright new talent; every role has seemingly been cast impeccably, with a depth to its ensemble that few shows since "The Wire" can match.

While the summer is an excuse for the movie studios to roll out their biggest offerings, television executives are much more afraid of warm weather, leaving the television dial mostly as a wasteland of repeats and reality shows. As such, the TV season essentially gets underway in September, and runs through to May (with cable dramas occasionally moving the goalposts a little either way -- "Breaking Bad" starts in July, "The Newsroom" next week).

With cinematic releases at the moment mostly involving the not-particularly inspiring likes of "That's My Boy" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," it's hard not to look to television for a little nourishment. The trouble is that the TV season has wrapped up for the year. While a few shows (namely "Girls") are still wrapping up, and others get underway shortly ("The Newsroom," "Breaking Bad," "Louie"), it's pretty quiet on the box, with cast and creatives focusing on making a hiatus movie, campaigning for Emmy, or just getting some sleep for once.

While the series has kept the "Game Of Thrones" title from the first novel, George R. R. Martin's book series are collectively known as "A Song Of Ice & Fire," and while hints of the relevance of that have been contained throughout the show so far, that title has never been so front & center than in "Valar Morghulis," the superb season two finale, which managed to give satisfying climaxes to most of the ongoing stories that have run throughout the last nine episodes, including those that have been rather less developed.
