With a ridiculously stacked cast including Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi and many more, in many ways this will be a big test test for "Zombieland" and "30 Minutes Or Less" director Ruben Fleischer. Working with a top shelf ensemble on a period picture, this is a number of firsts for the director, but as he tells EW (who has the first official still from the movie) that was what made it exciting for him.

'Sunshine' Star Troy Garity Will Try To Kill Ryan Gosling & Josh Brolin In 'Gangster Squad'

For a time, a decade or so ago, it seemed that Troy Garity was heading to big things. The son of Jane Fonda, and grandson of Henry Fonda, the actor broke through with a scene-stealing turn in Barry Levinson's "Bandits," before going on to feature as the token white guy in the "Barbershop" movies, and deliver a neat little performance as one of the excellent cast of Danny Boyle's "Sunshine." But he never quite made it to the next level, having spent much of the last few years in TV and little-known indies.

It's an early sign of talent to watch out for when little-known actors manage to score roles in major, highly anticipated films. Going by that theory then, Ambyr Childers -- best known for her stint as Colby Chandler on "All My Children" -- is definitely someone to keep an eye on after nabbing a part in Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and now joining Ruben Fleischer's "Gangster Squad."

Says Ruben Fleischer Is The Right Man For 'Gangster Squad' & 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Will Bring Testosterone Back To The Vampire GenreOne glance at Anthony Mackie’s IMDB page should convince you he’s a hard worker. Since breaking out with smaller parts in “8 Mile” and “Million Dollar Baby” the actor has been working almost constantly ever since. In 2011 alone, he has “The Adjustment Bureau,” the upcoming “What’s Your Number,” the TIFF-approved “Ten Year” and the robot boxing movie opening October 7th that’s riding on some positive buzz, “Real Steel.”

If you had any doubt that period gangster movie starring Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Anthony Mackie, Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Emma Stone and Nick Nolte was awards season material, well Warner Bros. has made it official, giving the film a plum October 19, 2012 release date. We're sure organizers at TIFF, Telluride and Venice are already working the phones.

For a few years there, Nick Nolte seemed lost in the weeds. After "Hotel Rwanda" the actor's work was patchy at best, but he is gearing up one helluva career revival. On HBO he's got a role in Michael Mann and David Milch's forthcoming horse racing world drama "Luck"; he's Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton's Dad in "Warrior"; he's set to star in Robert Redford's political thriller "The Company You Keep," and he's even going to hang out with Jason Statham in "Parker." Well, he's about to bring his grizzled charm to a project that outshines all of these.

We try and keep up with television, we really do, but there is only so much time in the day and Lord knows, our channel flipping rarely ever takes us to Cinemax so forgive us if we've never heard of "Strike Back." But whether or not we watch it doesn't matter as people in Hollywood clearly have and Sullivan Stapleton is now trading up into a movie role.

Wait, who? While the name Frank Grillo might be not familiar yet, Hollywood has certainly taken a shine to the actor lately. Best known for his stint on the shortlived ABC series "The Gates" (or for his role as Jessup on the daytime soap "The Guiding Light") Grillo has been earning strong buzz for his role as Joel Edgerton's trainer in the upcoming "Warrior" and has already knocked out a performance in Stephen Frears' "Lay The Favorite." Well, Grillo is going to spend the rest of 2011 working on two high-profile pictures adding some serious meat to his scattered IMDB page.

Trying to replace Bryan Cranston is kind of a no-win situation but Robert Patrick? Sure, we can dig that.
