Hailee Steinfeld, Pitch Perfect 2
After a steady stream of rumors surrounding its storyline and lead actors, Josh Trank’s “Fantastic Four” reboot is finally underway and filming, with Miles Teller, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara, and Michael B. Jordan set to battle Dr. Doom (Toby Kebbell). However, there are still some shifts to be made, as the superhero film has added one actor and also denied another from signing on to a long-gestating biopic.

Noah, Russell Crowe, Aronofsky
This week sees the release of “Noah,” and it’s notable for a number of reasons. For one, it’s that it’s a relatively rare Biblical movie not aimed principally at religious audiences (which may or may not pay off). For another, it’s the latest film from “Requiem For A Dream” and “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky. But perhaps more than anything else, it’s a movie that costs $125 million, almost four times as much as the director’s most expensive previous film, “The Fountain,” the helmer having been given the keys to Paramount’s war chest after the surprise smash success of “Black Swan,” which made nearly $300 million worldwide.

For all of the considerable questions raised in “Ender's Game," director Gavin Hood's adaptation of Orson Scott Card's sci-fi novel, they ultimately all revolve around process. The film has numerous steps toward intergalactic war pitting Earth against an alien race and is most engaged when exploring the moral, strategic, and psychological knots at each juncture, only tied to the military teens trained to lead the effort. Those three aspects are troublesome, however: they're hard to depict cinematically, quibbles which have made Card's internally-focused work so meddlesome to adapt. But more importantly, if made the central force of the unfolding drama, they require articulation deeper than what Hood's ambitious but unsatisfying fable provides.

Ender's Game
Awkward. Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment have taken the young adult sci-fi film "Ender's Game" to Comic-Con to market it to the masses. And the first question to come out of the mouths of audiences? Asking how involved "Ender's Game" author Orson Scott Card is in the making of the movie. Card, has stirred major unwanted controversy around the movie with his bigoted anti-gay comments, something that Lionsgate is doing their best to distance themselves from, and they were probably hoping no on would ask at the gigantic, supposed-to-be light trade show.

Casting is always a difficult proposition, but doubly so when it comes to finding an actor or actress on the younger end of the scale; picking a fledgling young star who doesn't come across as being too precious, while still being able to sell potentially difficult material. And it's triply difficult when you're working from well-established material, with all the preconceived notions that might be in place for an audience. These are the difficulties that director Gavin Hood has been faced with for his new film, "Ender's Game."

Gavin Hood's developing sci-fi pic "Ender's Game" just got a major boost. At the end of last week, Roberto Orci -- one half of the hugely successful writing/producing duo with Alex Kurtzman - hit Twitter to reveal: "Ender's Game! Us(K/O), Oddlot, and Gavin Hood taking his amazing script to the town! Who wants some?"
