Dom Hemingway
Finding someone to play legendary author Thomas Wolfe (no, not the white suit guy, the other one) is no small feat. He was a large dude (he sometimes wrote freehand putting his paper on top of the refrigerator), a big drinker, and had a voracious appetite for food (and women), but even with all that, he was deeply sensitive, with his not-so-fictional books shining through with pain, wisdom and beauty accrued from his own experiences. And so, the long-attached Michael Fassbender always seemed a pretty inspired choice to play him in "Genius," but he has exited the project and another actor from across the pond has subbed in.

It's been nearly two years since we've heard anything about "Genius," so we'll bring you back up to speed. The long-developing project has moved in fits and starts over the years, but in 2012 got a boost when Colin Firth and Michael Fassbender signed up for the lead roles, with promises of production starting in early 2014. Well, we're in early 2014 and it looks like the wheels on this one are turning again, with another big star apparently joining.

Wait, Sean Penn out? When was he in? Michael Fassbender? If "Genius" seems to be coming completely out of the blue, don't feel too bad because the long-gestating project has been moving in fits and starts for a couple of years now, and the last news we had was way back in January 2011, when it looked like it was going to be a Fassy/Penn joint. Well, the bad news is that Penn is out, the good news is that Firth is in. As for whether or not this means it will actually get made, is up in the air.

EXCLUSIVE: Back last summer, it was revealed that Sean Penn was in talks to star in "Genius," an adaptation of the National Book Award-winning non-fiction work "Max Perkins: Editor of Genius" by A. Scott Berg. Written by John Logan ("Gladiator") (the script made the Black List back in 2007), the film would find Penn playing the legendary Perkins, a Scribner's editor who worked with giants like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Wolfe. And it appears one of the hottest rising young actors is now taking a look at the gestating film.
