While we weren't exactly over the moon for last fall's "Hotel Transylvania," an ambitious, freewheeling 3D monster mash from Sony Pictures Animation that never seemed to settle down long enough to let us become emotionally invested in its characters or scenarios, we were beyond thrilled to be watching the debut feature from Genndy Tartakovsky, a supernaturally talented animator behind influential series "Samurai Jack" and "Dexter's Labratory." While a Transylvanian sequel has been fast-tracked at Sony without Tartakovsky, he's not done with that world yet – as a gorgeous new animated short proves.

Over the weekend, the animated monster mash "Hotel Transylvania" scared away September box office records and established its director, Genndy Tartakovsky, previously known for his work on the small screen with series like "Dexter's Laboratory" and the highly influential "Samurai Jack," as a major force in feature animation. We talked to the director about how he was able to crack the notoriously difficult story, what happened with projects that involved everyone from J.J. Abrams to Jim Henson's company to George Lucas, and what his approach to a 3D feature animation-based "Popeye" will be.

Well, it looks like Sony is very happy with "Hotel Transylvania," the animated monster mash that could be a graveyard smash when it opens in September, since the studio has just tapped the film's extremely talented director, Genndy Tartakovsky, to take on a big screen animate update of "Popeye" (according to Variety). Also, a couple of new "Hotel Transylvania" images have been released – so put your paws together for that, too.
