Here's he goes again. When Dan Aykroyd showed up on “The Today Show” this week to discuss his new film “Get On Up,” talk of course eventually turned to the "Ghostbusters" series, and in particular "Ghostbusters 3." Never one to miss a moment to ensure everyone that the movie is happening, he now says the paranormal franchise sequel would shoot next week.

For a movie that still has no director, no release date and seems to be forever spinning its wheels, despite tentative plans to shoot next year, there's surely been a lot written about "Ghostbusters 3." Either people are genuinely interested or they like a good story about development hell, but once again, more rumors were thrown into the pile this week. Nikki Finke reported, then quickly deleted, a story Max Landis ("Chronicle") was going to be involved in a writing capacity on the movie, something Landis quickly took to Twitter to deny in a series of tweets (collected by Slashfilm). But it's not like he doesn't have any ideas.

Sequels That Killed The Franchise
30 years ago last week, “Ghostbusters” hit our screens. It was an anniversary feted by many, (ourselves included, check out our nostalgia trip back to summer 1984), with articles, celebrations, appreciations, oral histories and even the announcement of a forthcoming theatrical re-release all timed to capitalize on the film’s now-classic status. By contrast, the 25th anniversary of “Ghostbusters II,” which happens this week, comes upon us largely unheralded, with perhaps just a far-off slow clap and an internet tumbleweed or two to mark the occasion. Safe to say the sequel is not quite as beloved as the original.

Sigourney Weaver, Aliens, Ghostbusters
Well, actress Sigourney Weaver is certainly a chatty Cathy as of late. It’s probably because “Ghostbusters” celebrated its thirtieth anniversary last week and now everyone’s getting all misty and nostalgic about the movie (including us, we Ranked The Movies Of Summer 1984 and looked at The 20 Greatest Movie Theme Songs Of The 1980s in its honor). And so in a recent Vanity Fair piece looking back at everyone’s favorite spook busters, Weaver was asked about “Ghostbusters 3.”

22 Jump Street
With one hit movie under their belts this year with "The Lego Movie," and another likely champ in "22 Jump Street" opening this weekend (review here), Hollywood is Phil Lord and Chris Miller's oyster at the moment. Meaning, that they can basically do whatever they want. So it's no surprise they are getting scripts and projects tossed their way, so it wasn't a total shock when Sony offered them the long-developing "Ghostbusters 3." The story made headlines, but the pair quickly turned it down, but not for the reasons you might think.

Last Friday and headed into the weekend, there was a flurry of activity around Marvel's "Ant-Man," with the end result being that Adam McKay dropped out of talks, with Ruben Fleischer and Rawson Thurber emerging as the contenders for the gig, with the latter seen as the frontrunner. Why? For a couple of reasons, but one that includes Fleischer in the mix for another brewing tentpole.

22 Jump Street
So, a couple weeks back, you may have been delighted (or horrified) by the news that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were eyeing the director's chair for the forever developing "Ghostbusters 3." On the one the hand, these are the guys have turned out critically acclaimed smash hits "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs," "21 Jump Street" and "The Lego Movie." On the other hand, they can do so much better than trying revive this wheezing, forever developing sequel. And thankfully they've bailed.

Phil Lord Chris Miller Elizabeth Banks The Lego Movie
In an industry hellbent on rebooting, remaking, spinning off and repackaging toys, comic books, TV shows and more, Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the rare example of guys who make whatever they touch fresh, creative and hugely entertaining. On paper, it was hard to see what "21 Jump Street" could become, but in execution Lord and Miller created a ludicrously hilarious buddy movie. And in "The Lego Movie," the pair used the framework of a toy movie for a subversive, wildly inventive adventure infused with pure imagination. And everything they've touched (including "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs") has been a smash at the box office. So, who ya gonna call for "Ghostbusters 3"?

Ghostbusters 2 Ivan Reitman
We've been here before. At one time rumored for a May 2011 start and then summer 2013, the long developing "Ghostbusters 3" has had a lot of plans that have yet to come to fruition. So, you might be well advised to take this next update with a grain of salt.

Ghostbusters 2
t's barely been 24 hours since Harold Ramis sadly passed away, but Hollywood business doesn't wait, and that means Sony is trying to figure out what to do with their forever-developing "Ghostbusters 3." The project (which has been haunted by Dan Aykroyd continually talking about the movies) is still being worked on, but seems a long way away from anything resembling a green light. And with Ramis passing, some tweaks will obviously have to be made.
