When asked by ScreenCrush if the "G.I. Joe" franchise was in trouble following the decent, if not quite exceptional $375 million worldwide take for "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (only about $70 million more than its predecessor), producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was candid: "I think the studio was very unsure about it. Look, you always wonder until they say yes, really," he said. Well, it looks like they're saying yes.

Summer 2016
It wasn’t that long ago when people were writing premonitions, pre-nostalgic anticipations and “whoa, look out” warning pieces about the massive pile-up of gigantic blockbusters heading for the summer of 2015. That's still true to a degree, but the landscape has shifted and 2016 is looking bigger, brighter and scarier.

Star Trek 3, GI Joe 3, Transformers 5 Coming In 2016
"Well, they’ve talked about doing more," Mark Wahlberg told HitFix about possible future "Transformers" films. "When you make a deal on a movie like this, they’re definitely going to want to negotiate those things in advance." And while he's being cagey, he's also correct that these days, studios want to tie down their franchise actors. And let's not forget that last year, Wahlberg was a bit more definitive about his role in the series saying, "I definitely had to sign up for three." Of course, Paramount is banking on audiences showing up, and clearly they're confident they will.

Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson in G.I. Joe: Retaliation
Apparently the admirably goofy "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" made enough money that Paramount and Hasbro are going back to the based-on-a-line-of-popular-action-figures well one more time; they've just hired Evan Daugherty, the screenwriter behind last summer's "Snow White and the Huntsman," to pen "G.I. Joe 3." Paramount was impressed with the work Daugherty did getting their "Ninja Turtles" screenplay into fighting shape (sorry, couldn't resist). 'Retaliation' director Jon M. Chu returns as director. As of now a silly subtitle has yet to be decided on.

Why? Because there are brands to maintain, franchises to continue and toys to sell. Because "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" is the 8th highest grossing film domestically so far in 2013, and earned nearly double that overseas for a worldwide tally of $365 million and change. Because, Dwayne Johnson. You may not be too thrilled, but Paramount has plenty of reasons to want to continue the "G.I. Joe" series.

In a move likely to be viewed by studio execs as a bolstering win rather than an uneasy battle, “GI Joe: Retaliation” has overcome delays, reshoots, and narrative rejiggering to win the weekend box-office with $54.7 million. Leading on to a $132 million global haul, that leaves Paramount with a deep sigh of relief, and a newfound aim to try their luck a third time.
