Has there ever been a franchise like the "Fast & Furious?" Begun over ten years ago with a film most notable for its '50s-style B-movie title, "The Fast & The Furious," it was a modest sleeper hit. Before long the series saw its biggest draw, the potato-headed growl-monster Vin Diesel, exit the series before it really got going, leading to the Paul Walker solo outing "2 Fast 2 Furious." Unsurprisingly, the box office for that one took a hit, a trend that continued with the Walker-free third outing "The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift." But ever since the series has been on a constant upswing, with "Fast Five" making nearly half-a-billion dollars worldwide, and even winning some critical plaudits, at least for series veteran Justin Lin.

It's been a bit of long and bumpy ride for Steven Soderbergh's lean, mean action pic "Haywire." First the movie went from Lionsgate to Relativity, and it was set up with an April 22nd release date. As the snow started melting, the movie was moved to late summer as fine tuning continued on the picture but then it was moved once more -- and finally -- to January 20, 2012. That might seem odd, but you have remember that "Contagion" just moved up a full month to a September 9th release and we'd wager that Soderbergh -- as well as Warner Bros. and Relativity -- wanted to make sure that there was breathing room between both pics (and the ever busy Soderbergh is also shooting another new movie this fall, "Magic Mike" to complicate things further).

Relativity Media Will Distribute in U.S.Well, that's one film we can take out of awards contention for 2011. One of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming films "Haywire" won't be released till January 20, 2012. As we've been saying all along, Relativity Media has retained the domestic rights, with Lionsgate holding on to the foreign rights. Lionsgate was all set to release in the U.S. as well, until restructuring gave partner Relativity its own domestic arm for distribution. The initial date was April, 2011, which Soderbergh confirmed himself, but it was never officially announced; the restructuring deal points took much longer than anyone expected. Then August, 2011 became the next date everyone was zeroing on, but they too lost that window of opportunity when the deal pushed back the chance to release trailers and posters.

Filmmaker Gives More Details On The Leni Riefenstahl Project He Deep-SixedLate last year we reported that Steven Soderbergh's spy action thriller "Haywire," starring MMA fighter and non-actor Gina Carano, was set to bow on April 22. In January, Soderbergh himself confirmed that date, but obviously if you've been paying close attention, you know that's not happening.

Cliff Martinez Scoring 'Contagion'While we've lately been going off about the lack of quality female-led comedies with last year's "Easy A" and "Bridesmaids," "Bad Teacher" and "Friends With Benefits" on the way, it seems at least that gap will be filled for now. But another genre that has been largely void of strong female roles has been action films, but Steven Soderbergh is about to make a distinct impression in that field with his upcoming "Haywire."
