What Are You Seeing This Weekend? 'Burt Wonderstone' May Be 'The Call' For 'Spring Breakers' Everywhere

There's a certain sense of heightened and/or alternate reality pervading the theater releases this weekend. On the one hand, we have a film about magicians, professionals who create the illusion of having manipulated real world physics; plus, it takes place in Vegas, a city that, unto and of itself, is an entirely other universe. In the other corner is Harmony Korine's new picture, an exploitation flick where the Wizard of Oz leads the starlets of "High School Musical" in a coke-fueled game of Russian Roulette. And then, somewhere in the middle, "Little Miss Sunshine" gets kidnapped by a gasoline-hose-wielding sociopath.

Review: Intimate & Devastating ‘Ginger & Rosa’ Features A Transformative Elle Fanning Performance

Lovely and devastating, challenging yet worthwhile, Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" may be the English filmmaker's best since "Orlando," and perhaps her most accessible to date. The intimate and sensual picture also features yet another terrific performance by 14-year-old Elle Fanning, who is quickly becoming the most compelling teenage actor working in movies today. But this time, as the lead, Fanning is transformative, heartbreakingly conveying the inner life of an adolescent with an almost eerily nuanced command of her craft.

What Are You Seeing This Weekend? '21 And Over,' 'Jack The Giant Slayer' & 'The Last Exorcism' Lead The Charge

In Theaters: Jack The Giant Killer, 21 And Over, The Last Exorcism Part II,
Lots to look at this week! Unfortunately, the big studio pictures are a bit disappointing, featuring well-worn stories that aren't particularly innovative or entertaining. Popular critical opinion recommends ordering "The Hangover" or "Das Boot" from Netflix rather than paying for the direct descendants playing on the big screen. Lucky for multiplex owners, the institution of public film exhibition and us, a handful of international films, documentaries, and American independent pictures pick up the slack. So -- in the ongoing battle between the private DVD player and the theater projector -- what will it be: the couch or the cinema? Let us know in the comments below!

It's been a long, dark couple of months at the start of 2013, with not all that much that's been worth seeing, bar a few bright spots like "Side Effects" and "No." But as the days start to get sunnier and warmer (we hope so, at least, or we're going to jump off something tall fairly soon), the prospects at movie theaters are improving a bit too.

And one to mark on your calendar is "Ginger & Rosa."

And it's another glimpse at a movie that has earned some devoted flag waving by certain folks around The Playlist offices.

Given that upstart indie distributors usually don't have a chance against major studios or more established competitors when it comes to campaigning for its stars, if we were running things, Elle Fanning would be getting a nomination for "Ginger & Rosa." It's a film we loved at Telluride -- easily one of the highlights -- and we called Fanning's performance "transformative." And now that it's gearing up to open overseas, and the first clip from the movie has arrived.

Is director Sally Potter finally having her moment? While "Orlando" put her on the arthouse map in 1992, the ensuing years haven't been easy -- Cate Blanchett, Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci and Focus Features could not help "The Man Who Cried" earn more than $1.7 million globally in 2000, and 2004's "Yes" was killed by a scathing review in Variety even though audiences at the festival adored it. That has still made Potter gunshy about festivals, Telluride in particular, where "Yes" was brutalized.

There are few young actresses right now who are on quite the same trajectory as Elle Fanning. With directors like Cameron Crowe, J.J. Abrams, Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola, David Fincher, Tony Scott and Alejandro González Iñárritu already on her impressive CV, we can only imagine an Academy Award nomination isn't too far away. Her work just seems to be getting better and better, and her latest turn in Sally Potter's "Ginger & Rosa" may be her best yet.
