Girls
This weekend, the third season of "Girls" kicks off with two brand new episodes, and while you'll get our full recaps on Monday, we'll just say this: Lena Dunham hasn't missed a step. If you've been a fan of the show, you won't be disappointed, but it seems some folks still can't get their head around Dunham's unapologetic depictions of nudity and sex.

To be young, neurotic, creative and adrift in New York City... Those are just a few flavors of the lives of single young women that Lena Dunham brings to the small screen in "Girls," her much discussed semi-controversial HBO show. And while some have christened the program as the new "Sex & The City," Dunham has pushed way beyond any boundaries set by that show.

Hugely successful and perhaps equally controversial, there's no denying that Lena Dunham's "Girls" is nothing short of a phenomenon. And the creator/writer/producer/star has been striking while the iron is red hot, set to deliver the third season in less than three years in January. And a new teaser has landed showing off the first actual footage from the new season.

How I Met Your Mother
It took a few years, but actor Peter Facinelli (“Twilight” series) will finally see his Whitey Bulger project get off the ground. Facinelli was originally on board to produce a film adaptation of “Street Soldier: My Life as an Enforcer For Whitey Bulger and the Boston Irish Mob,” which was written by Edward MacKenzie and Phyllis Karas, but now Fox is looking to turn the project into a TV series.

As widely derided as the "Breaking Bad" finale was praised, Showtime's "Dexter" serial killer drama also came to an end recently, and many fans were not happy. While we're still a season behind, even someone not following the show only had to turn to social media over the run of its final episodes, to see the criticism flying left and right, and producer John Goldwyn puts the blame squarely on the network.

She didn't quite explode as instantly as some were predicting, but two years after her breakthrough role in "Like Crazy," Felicity Jones is going to be inescapable soon. The actress has already been seen this year in her excellent reteam with Drake Doremus, "Breathe In," and will be on the festival circuit in the fall with Ralph Fiennes' "The Invisible Woman." Beyond that, 2014 will bring "True Story" with James Franco and Jonah Hill, Stephen Hawking biopic "Theory Of Everything" opposite Eddie Redmayne, and her blockbuster debut in a mysterious role in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." And somehow, Jones is finding time to squeeze in a part on one of our favorite TV shows.

Unlike the movies, which do operate on a January-December basis when it comes to awards consideration, the TV season is a slightly different proposition. With ratings dipping in the summer, new shows tend to be unveiled in September or early fall, and are usually wrapping up by May. The rise of cable networks like FX and HBO has staggered this more, but the Emmys taking place in September tends to mean that the season has a more definitive end at this time of year.

Of course, nothing has been sacred when it comes to "Family Guy" and making jokes. No subject, person, historical event or [insert whatever] has been out of bounds for the creators, so as the four-time Emmy winning show gears up for another campaign, they've put last year's breakout show firmly on their radar.
