A Thousand Times Good Night
When revered Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami cancelled his attendance at the Marrakech Film Festival due to ill health, the organizers could have had a further problem on their hands as he was meant, in addition to giving a masterclass, to be handing out the award at one of the “Hommages”—the tributes given to a filmmaker or actor in recognition of their body of work. However, that one headache didn’t occur here because the recipient was Juliette Binoche, practically the busiest actress on the planet, and Bruno Dumont, her director in this year’s “Camille Claudel” and himself the subject of a Marrakech masterclass, stepped into the breach instead. It’s a mark of just how constantly she is shooting, and with what calibre of filmmaker, that, throw a stone at a festival like this, and you’ll hit two or three people who have worked with Binoche, and probably recently.

Godzilla
If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their "Godzilla" reboot/redo/do-over, we'd say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for "Godzilla" is here. Run for cover.

With Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" stomping into theaters next spring, we're undoubtedly going to see Warner Bros. and Legendary start pumping the marketing machine soon. And today, it looks like a teaser trailer has leaked online, seemingly unfinished (there's no credit block, only the above logo to close it off). So either someone has made a helluva great fan trailer, or someone in the marketing department is getting fired.

Alexander Desplat
If you've been to the movies at all in the past ten years you've heard at least one of Alexandre Desplat's scores. The French composer's filmography ranges from scoring Oscar-bait Brit bio-dramas ("The Queen," "The King's Speech,") to the last two installments of a beloved fantasy series ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" & 'Part 2') to Malick ("The Tree of Life"), Wes Anderson ("Fantastic Mr. Fox," "Moonrise Kingdom") to last year's Best Picture "Argo." Along the way, he has garnered five Oscar nominations but no win as yet. Now, in keeping with the composer's eclectic track record, Legendary has signed Desplat to tackle the upcoming "Godzilla" remake and we can't wait to hear what comes of it.

You gotta wonder if Warner Bros. and Legendary are feeling a bit nervous about next year's "Godzilla" after audiences were only mildly receptive to this summer's monster movie smashup "Pacific Rim." But there's one thing that Guillermo del Toro's movie didn't have that Gareth Edwards' upcoming flick does: brand recognition. Everyone around the world knows what Godzilla is and that alone could see people throwing their money at theater vendors to get catch a glimpse of the famed monster wreaking havoc one more time.

The Films Of Roland Emmerich
When it comes to bringing popcorn ready, big screen spectacle to the multiplex, there are few filmmakers (except for maybe Michael Bay) who do it with as much flair as Roland Emmerich. The German-born director has been making theater speakers rumble ever since "Universal Soldier," but he really made his mark in the '90s thanks to the White House exploding "Independence Day" (which has a sequel coming in 2015) and the monster movie "Godzilla." And since then, films like "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012" have come to define the trademarks most audiences know him for -- high concept FX vehicles in which the world is at peril, but rescued by an everyman who saves the day.

So, what do you get when you mix Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe and Juliette Binoche? Nope, not a Euro-flavored film about the intersecting lives of a multi-culti group of beautiful looking people living in, oh I dunno, Paris. Instead it's the cast of "Godzilla." And the ensemble has just gotten even more puzzling.

...and just like that, Warner Bros. has announced that production has started today on "Godzilla," with the studio, filmmakers and everyone else keeping a tight lock and seal over details or anything else concerning the production. But the press release did offer up a couple more eyebrow raising bits of casting for a monster movie that seems to be following the "Pacific Rim" playbook to a certain degree.

There are certain stable of actors, who might not be the most well known around the breakfast table or water cooler, but who are ever reliable players who can come off the bench in any more and hit a home run of a performance. And David Strathairn is one of those guys. An Oscar nominee ("Good Night And Good Luck") and two time Golden Globe nominee ("Good Night And Good Luck," "Temple Grandin") he's the kind of guy admired and respected by his peers, but who A-list fame eludes. But it doesn't matter, because the offers will keep rolling in and it speaks to his skill, that he's been drafted by a major blockbuster.
