Fall Film Preview 2014
It always happens too quickly. One moment we're munching on popcorn and sucking noisily on sodas while CG humanoid turtles fight onscreen. The next moment half of us are donning our top hats and monocles and swanning off to film festivals to harrumph about the latest obscure Euro arthouse sensation, and the other half are settling in for a long few months of sorting out obvious Oscar bait from the films that may actually bait Oscar. The gear change from Summer Tentpole period to Fall Festival/Awards Season is a pretty dramatic one, so we've prepared a little survival kit.

Gone Girl EW Header
This fall, Ben Affleck will be thrust back into the spotlight, but his prominence will have nothing to do with his humanitarian work or his role as Batman. He's the lead in David Fincher's "Gone Girl," but the director says that Affleck's experience in the limelight made him the perfect choice for a movie about a man suspected of having a role in the disappearance of his wife who subsequently faces intense media scrutiny.

Gone Girl
Whodunits won't get much more tantalizing than David Fincher's forthcoming "Gone Girl." Based on the best-seller by Gillian Flynn and led by Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, with a rather random batch of supporting players (Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Patrick Fugit), the mystery movie continue to parse out promo material like clues to a puzzle, and today brings another interesting bit of material.

It's hard to believe, but in less than one month, the Venice Film Festival will kick off with Alejandro González Iñárritu’s "Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance," launching both the fest season and the awards calendar all at once. And while it's certainly a high-profile movie, and a major get for the fest, it can't be denied that the two movies every festival organizer wants this year is David Fincher's "Gone Girl" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice." And credit to New York Film Festival for snagging the World Premiere for both movies, but as you might guess, the reasons why they landed there versus Venice or Toronto or Telluride is complicated.

Gone Girl, Ben Affleck
David Fincher’s done way too many grim crime thrillers centered around murder, right? There’s serial killer film “Se7en,” serial killer procedural “Zodiac,” serial killer mystery “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” and "Panic Room" and "The Game" both have elements of murder, crime and mystery. But it’s not really by conscious design.

Gone Girl Ben Affleck
Last month, we got the first trailer for David Fincher's fall thriller "Gone Girl," and as expected, it really got people talking. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn — who has since clarified her remarks about how drastically the ending has been changed or not from her book — it stars Ben Affleck as a man who becomes the prime suspect when his wife, played by Rosamund Pike, goes missing. But as always, the truth is never quite what it seems. And while the trailer was clever — archly powered by a cover of Elvis Costello's "She" by Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs — it kept the tone of the movie just out of reach. Well, one person who has seen it is Trent Reznor. And he has some interesting things to say.

At the beginning of the year, word emerged that David Fincher's "Gone Girl," based on the best-seller by Gillian Flynn, would throw fans for a loop by switching up the ending. “Ben [Affleck] was so shocked by it. He would say, ‘This is a whole new third act! She literally threw that third act out and started from scratch,’” the author herself told EW at the time. But hitting a Reddit AMA today, she tempered her comments a bit.
