Right now, David Fincher appears to be at a bit of a crossroads in terms of what he'll do next. Obviously, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" sequels are still sorting out their issues before they can get made, but over the past couple of months, the director has taken good hard looks at both the thriller "Gone Girl" -- recently touted as the most likely candidate for his next movie -- and the long-developing "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea: Captain Nemo" at Disney for his upcoming projects. And the latter has just received twenty million or so good reasons why it might be his next film.

It's been in the works for a while now, but according to Deadline last night, geek favorite David Fincher is inching closer to signing on to an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel "Gone Girl." The novel, by the former EW staffer who already had some success with thrillers "Sharp Objects" and "Dark Places" (that are also both being developed for movies), was snapped up by Reese Witherspoon not long after publication, and rave reviews and word-of-mouth have seen it become a literary phenomenon over the last year or so. Even if you haven't read it yourself, you probably know plenty of people who have, or at least have seen a subway car full of people carrying it.

Sony May Write Daniel Craig Out Of 'Dragon Tattoo' Sequels As Actor Asks For Raise

There has been a lot of speculation about why Sony has been taking their time in getting a sequel in front of cameras for "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo." Maybe the studio was expecting more than the over $230 million they took in worldwide for the hard-R, adult thriller. Perhaps it's the price point, with fees for David Fincher, Scott Rudin and screenwriter Steve Zaillian tallying between $25-$35 million before a frame of film is even shot (not to mention that Fincher gets $5 million anyway as part of his pay-or-play deal if Sony goes with someone else). However, the studio has continually insisted a followup is coming...but just not before 2014. And now things seem to have gotten a bit more complicated.

David Fincher May Direct 'Gone Girl' For Fox & Reese Witherspoon

So let's do a bit of recap: As you might remember, the studio put David Fincher on three-month hold last October, as they set about making a decision about the Jules Verne adaptation "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea." Certainly, there's been no word on the project since then, and while Fincher's name was bandied about for another, much higher profile Disney tentpole -- "Star Wars: Episode 7" -- it looks like the director potentially has something else in mind.
